How do you avert embarrassment when you are misunderstood?

When a man failed to find his partner at a ball and was looking at others wistfully. A graceful lady showed up and came to him, asking "sir would you like to dance?" the man was so excited and kept on saying "yes". He hurried up and the women smiled,"thanks, then I can take your seat and have a rest."
Have you ever experienced the same case? Though you are kind-hearted, you may offend others because of your inappropriate words; or have you made some jokes for misunderstanding other's meaning?
