Why do old lovers able to become friends?

Thank you for the response.
I just want to put emphasis on the kind of 'love' we are talking about here. What I meant on the post was the love (associated with intimacy, romance, lifetime partner, and the like)
When you say that they became friends because they realized that they can be better off as friends, so that means they never really 'loved' each other when they were lovers. It was just a friendly affection.
I hope I'm making sense.

I can't find the third reason, there are only two situations there, they never loved each other, or they love each other still. I think maybe your two reasons are correct.
firstly, if they never loved each other, it is very possible for them to become friends, because they can face each other calmly.
secondly, if they loved each other still, and they currently have their own lovers, it is possible for them to become friends, because they get self-content for themselves. if they are still singles, i think it is very hard for them to become good friends if they loved each still.
