Talking to your pets...I do all the time...How about you?

I got caught talking to my 2 cats as I was cleaning yesterday and my neighbor seemed to think I was abit crazy. She'd come over to borrow some garden tools and I was in the front living room and was telling my cats that they needed to stop hiding their toys under the couch since it was a pain to move it to get them out again. Mine listen and sometimes seem to really understand. They do have a vocabulary of human words like dinner time, get down, come here, stop that etc that they do seem to understand and respect and respond to. And I have been learning their different meows so we are training each other so to speak! So am I abit crazy or do you talk to your cats like they are almost human?

hello tallygirl, nah...you're not being crazy there..hehe i guess most of us who have pets and love pets do talk with them as if they are also human! just like me, i am always talking to them, i call them by name and i am always happy when they respond and act like they really understands what i am telling them...i think they even listen to my naggings! my pets are like babies and part of the family to us, just two days ago we adopted a new puppy and haha...i am so happy that i have another one to talk with when i am alone and when my cats are not at home!

How wonderful to have a new puppy to add to the family!! My cats are part of my family too, they just happen to be furry and have 4 feet. My girl cats have even started to meow in different ways to tell me what they want. And they are so very happy when they get it, I can see their little grins. Dog faces are abit more expresive than cats but cats grin too in my humble opinion! Thanks for sharing, so nice to know that I am not a crazy cat lady at least not yet...LOL.

You're not crazy at all.I have two dogs two cats and a rabbit and at home we always talk to them and they ac tually respond to that. They are very clever and it's so sweet to see how they really listen to you. They do understand what humans say to them.So i do talk to them as if they're humans :) There's nothing wrong with that.

I think it is 100% normal to talk to pets. It is a way of caring for them in a loving way. Some people that don't like pets won't understand owners talking to their pets. I have two miniature poodle dogs called Secret and Magic. They are intelligent and they understand some of what I say. They know words like 'dinner' and 'toilet in the garden' I am pleased to say. They will understand different tones of voice like happy or cross. I love my pets very much indeed. Secret and Magic are part of my family.

I don't have a cat, but I talk to my dog all the time, after all it's just me and her here. I once read that dogs could only understand about 10 words, I think that is completely wrong. She understands way more than just 10 words. She knows what going outside means, to get in her chair, going night night (at bedtime), and which toy I'm talking about if I tell her to go get a particular one. Of course she knows all the simple commands, but she understands way more than that. I was staying in the country, she wasn't used to having neighbors like we do now, so she wanted to bark at them all the time. I told her they were okay, they were not in her yard, no barking at them. She must have understood, now she just watches them. lol

I completely agree that our pets understand far more than we know! I think many humans have decided that we are the most intelligent of creatures and judge all animals against our own type of intelligence. My cats know more than 10 words or commands too. Tho they don't always obey them! Overall I think dogs are more accomodating and cooperative than cats. I love having mine in my home as they are so sweet and love being with me. Whatever room I'm in, they come and hang out. How wonderful that you were able to explain the neighbors and she agreed to just watch them very closely. Now that's cooperation! To me, my life would not be nearly so happy without my baby girls. They are almost like children to me. And boy are they spoiled too!! Take care!!

i have a pet dog and her name is "heather". She is like a human to me because when you try to call her a different name, she won't look back but when you call her with her name, she'll walk towards you. funny isn't it? Maybe they can feel us even though they cannot understand what we mean. :)

I think that maybe we humans underestimate our pets alot of the time! She clearly knows her name and figures it's not important if you use another name. She doesn't think you are talking to her then so that's very smart! Dogs are so much more responsive to their owners than cats overall I think. I adore my cats but miss very much my girl dog Mocha since she was so attentive and wonderful. It's funny that I was raised with cats and never had a dog til a few years ago and was surprised how different they are and how much I feel in love with her. Once I get things abit more secure financially I want to get another dog to add to my family of pets. Take good care!

I talk to my dogs all the time. I think they understand me so I don't mind if people would think I'm crazy or something. LOL. I like talking to them, cause when I look into their eyes I can see that they really understand what I'm trying to tell them.

No, I talk to my pets everyday and I don't think I am crazy. Plant owners are advised to talk to their plants too! Our pets are like people. They need our attention too and they are very loyal listeners. They would listen to everything you tell them and they understand. They are the sweetest creatures on earth. Those who do not have pets will never understand this so let's not waste our time explaining to them.

I must admit I do talk to my cat all the time - especially when I'm in the house on my own with her. She follows me around everywhere as I go about my daily chores, so it would seem uncaring not to talk to her. Sometimes she looks as if she's really listening too! Pets are part of our family aren't they? So it seems only natural to talk to them.

Well i do that always, to my doggie. And best part is he replies me somthing though i cannot understand. He always answer for any thing we raise as a question. Its always funny and nice. They can even talk, and we should try to get a clue of its trying to say.

Im an animal lover myself. You are not crazy at all. Its very normal to talk to your pet once in a while. I do this everytime I feed my dog and cat. Oftentimes I feel that they understand me. Pets can easily sense a person's feelings towards them. For some reason dogs in my neighborhood dont bark at me. And for some reason also dogs in that same neighborhood barks at my sister who happens to hate dogs? Do you think dogs really sense what people feels towards them?

Cats and dogs can learn human speech. My cats do speak to me at times, although their speech is hard to understand. Animals have their tongues and mouths shaped different than ours so that it makes it difficult for animals to talk to us. There are lots of times of course when our pets simply do not want to do what we tell them to do. They do have the ability to think for themselves.

I grew up with cats but we only had 1 cat so she had to split her time being nice to each of us and she did it so well! We used to joke as kids that we'd grow up to be cat people and we did! All but one of my siblings have at least 1 cat and the one who doesn't can't have cats cause her husband is very allergic. Cats are definitely more independent than dogs but I think just as loving. I really want to get a puppy when my finances balance out so I am looking forward to that. Luffy is such a cute name! Thanks for sharing!! Take care!

Yes that is a wonderful benefit of having a pet. You can tell them all your thoughts, worries and secrets and they really do seem to listen! My cats talk back sometimes when I tell them to do something which on one hand I think shows their intelligence and yet also their stubborness. I have one cat, Cleo that loves to climb on top of the TV but when she does, she often messes up the cable signal. So when I see her do it, I tell her to get down. She will sometimes give a short little meow that is different from her other meows. Then I will tell her again and get the same response. It's almost like an arguement! BUT if I have to tell her a 3rd time, she will get down but looks very very annoyed with me. She is definitely a one of kind cat for me since I've never had a cat argue with me! Take care!!

Yes I do actually They can learn some words, but they mostly understand what you mean from your way of talking, from your volume of speaking etc... Our cat seems to understand "Everyone to sleep", and he's always the only one to obey. He also comes to ask us to let him out, when he wants to; He goes either to in front of the outdoor and starts meowing, or he comes to a family member and tries to drag him/her to the door. He does the same thing when he wants food. Don't worry, you'r not crazy. You just love your cats and enjoy being with them

Welcome to mylotting!! It's amazing that if we pay attention, our cats can train us with the meow language just like we try to train them with our commands. I have 2 cats and they are both so different yet each wonderfully special! I miss them very much whenever I go away but traveling with cats is not at all like with a dog. My girls are very important members of my family too! Take care and Be well!!
