when should you tell your kids the truth?

how old do you think a child should be when they learn the truth about the easter bunny, tooth fairy, santa clause and such? do think its right to tell them that those things are real, or should we encourage them to believe in such fairy tales?

Perhaps it would be better not to get them to believe in these characters in the first place.
They may feel betrayed or lied to when they do find out they aren't true.
When reading stories, make sure the child knows that they are "make believe" or imagination.
