Funny I didn't hear anything about an earthquake in Calif on the news, but I actually heard about it from some of my friends over at Facebook who live in the Calif area...I was born in California (Garden Grove area) and my mother told me there would be "rumbles" felt all the time, but nothing serious. Makes me wonder if NYC will be hit soon...yes, believe it or not NY had had earthquakes in the past, nothing as drastic but yes, felt one, one time at around 3 a.m.....woke my grandmother, mother and me up
Glad you weren't scared Hatley...my grandmother freaked out when we had our earthquake

I think I may have heard somthing about that, and thankfully we really dont have earthquakes here where I live, though I have some family that live there, but from what I can understand is that know one was hurt and thats good, it was only a mild quake.

It sure beats me how you folk can live like that. What on earth possessed your pioneers and ancestors to build cities and highways and suburbs on a ruddy fault line??
That's just insane. (I know I shouldn't laugh but I wanted to set the tone so you would not think I was being nasty.)

MsTickle you know since I came here to live and heard abou the fault lines i have asked the same questions.did you know that our junior college Orange Coast jr.College was built on a fault line? Is that
not really nutty . and our freeways it always scares me when I am in the acess bus and we are tooling along at 80 miles an hour what would happen even with a light tremor, would the freeway break down like in the northridge quake? also what makes some people here built multi million dollar homes on a hillside that has unstable soil. the first heavy rains and the whole thing comes sliding downhill. I think some of the answers are that our pioneers had no knowledge of fault lines at all. this all came much later you know. You are not being nasty at all. we also laugh at times too, and try not to worry about each little shake.

I am glad you are safe and not that shaken because of it. Well I'm all the way across the country in NC. We really don't have earthquakes here. Was there any damage in other counties of California?

hi somecowgirl No real damage in california that I heard of they did s ay it swayed high rise building in LosAngeles and sloshed water out of swimming pools. near the border a book store reported an overhead light fixture coming down. It was centered in Mexicali Mexico and 7.2 I am safe here but sure gave everyone something to talk about at dinner here. I am on the second floor, and wonder just what a harder one would have felt like. wow.

Well it didn't sound like it did any real damage. I'm guessing it would be a lot stronger on the ground floor had you been there at the time. Did anyone else get scared, or have you talked to anyone who was on the ground floor then?

Boy! A 7.2 earthquake, huh? I didn't feel a thing. I am up in Idaho and I have wondered when we are going to have something up here. I recall afew when I was little but nothing for quite afew years. I remember some new neighbors afew years ago had moved here from California because the gal had been so traumatized by some earthquakes.

I'm in Alabama but I hope it wasn't too bad. I hope nobody was hurt or anything. I don't remember if I ever told you this, Hatley, but I have kinfolks who live in Napa, California, near San Francisco. They've had to deal with earthquakes in the past. You said it was quite a ways from where you live but I still hope Mexicali wasn't damaged too bad. Kathy.

Well, I am in Kansas, and no we did not feel it. I know of some people who are getting really nervous because they are happening more and more often, it seems. I also know that any place can have an earthquake, and that no place is really safe.

Yes, we are known for tornadoes, and there have been some severe ones. Usually we know when they are coming, though, and can take precautions. I lived near San Diego for a while so I have felt the earth move a bit. And any state can also have a tornado.

I grew up in S outhDakota an we also had a ton of tornadoes. one hot
summer day my mom and I watched three tornadoes moving along sideways to'
us on the horizon. Papa tornado, mama tornado and baby tornado and they were really moving. Landed in Spearfish in the lower foot hills of the Black Hills taking apart every thing in their path.plowed through several farm houses then took out one third of Spearfish a town of may be 1000 people. for some reason that particular region was hit quite often. We had tornadoes almost every summer just as soon as the weather gothot and over'dry bam they started,.but with them now days we have all sorts of warning. I haven't been back in fifty years. too bad too as I have
friends'back there

hi gardengerty twice lol I had the same thing happen to me only my response came in triplicate. still do notknow what I did wrong. some here have told me they have even had earthquakes in NewYork city. wow."
I saw the pictures of Mexicali and Calexico yesterday and boy was the damage really bad, specially in Mexicali there at the epicenter, most of the buildings were all down and a lot of people were injured, but surprislingly only two were killed, I guess they need everything, and its a much larger city than I realized, pop in the milllions while Calexico is more of a border town but they cannot reallyhelp Mexicali according to the mayor as they were almost wiped out t oo. so we were lucky here as all we felt was that icky rolling rocking feeling for one full minute.

Hi kimbers867 I guess it was felt in several states but was centered around Mexicali Mexico the epicenter, was 7:2. So far there were no reports of any injuries but some stuff falling off shelves closer to the border like San Diego. I am fine here as we just got the edge of it, this time it really did roll, moved my bed back and forth, I was sitting trying to stick my finger for blood test so gave up on that for awhile. he he.

hi fwidman you are in the Arizona high desert we used to live in Tempe arizona, seems like out in the desert it does really blow so you might not have noticed as the wind can shake a house any way. what always intrigued me there was the nights could be really cold when we would take a drive out around Scottsdale in the desert. I sort of liked living in
'arizona but my husband felt the jobs were better here in 'ca.

I'm not in Arizona, Hatley. I'm about 65 miles northeast of Los Angeles up close to where the Space Shuttle used to land at Edwards AFB.
The desert of Arizona is a beautiful place as I recall from traveling through it a few times. Didn't know it was as windy as the rest of the desert but I guess I shouldn't be shocked. Even the great Sahara Desert is windy. Must be because there is so little to slow the wind down in the desert

We never felt it here in the Philippines but we had one a week or two ago. The news says it's 6.2, it's the strongest earthquake i had experienced so far. It made me dizzy, i knew then that it's strong because i can hear the steel bars in our ceilings creaking. It sure was scary. I think there must be truth to what scientist are saying that earthquakes tend to be more frequent during summer and it's summer here in the philippines. But i'm glad you're OK hatley. Take care.

hi ybong007 I am just fine You have had it in the Philippines for sure. I would get dizzy too if it lasted very long I think they are right that they come in the summer more often. summer in the Philippines I understand you are quite tropical there, and it gets pretty warm so I imagine you can grow a lot of fruit we might not be able to grow even her in California. take care. lets hope neither of us has any more shaking. lol.

this one lasted almost a minute but was not really that had. oh a penthouse that might be scary as it would sway wow. its odd what buildings toppled and what did not during the northridge quake
a few years back I think the vA hospital topple over on its side.oh that must have been so scary. that was a bad quake close to LA a few years back people were killed when big sections of the freeway tore apart. hope that never happens again.wow.

I really hope so hatley. The last one we encountered lasted for more than 30 seconds and to think that we are located at the pent house of an old building which was built in the 70's. I'm sure this building will not last long when a more stronger earthquake hit.

Glad to hear that no one was hurt but that is scary. That is one of the reasons my man does not want to move to Cali, but we have hurricanes. That minute must feel like an eternity though to those that it was near to. Well take Hatley, now for another day in paradise.

hi both of you oh I hate wind storms and we used to get them in south dakota but not like hurricanes of course,we had tornadoes instead. yes that would be an advantate knowing when it was coming. that minute did seem to hold on for awhile and I sure was not going to try to pr#ck my finger for a blood test right then. dont worry about typos as I do that all the time too. he he he.

I sure felt it here in Hemet. I was sitting at the computer. The shaking seemed to last a long time -- so long that I said, "Whoa, this is getting serious." It did teach me a lesson. With a little more shaking, this desk could fall apart and the monitor could easily topple. I'm going to look into making the desk more stable :-D and somehow anchor the monitor.
I worked in Santa Monica when the Northridge Quake happened. What a mess the office was. Even steel shelving units -- a quake so strong it bent the poles.
I heard yesterday's quake was felt as far away as Phoenix.

It certainly seems that there are more quakes than usual around the world, but maybe we're just hearing about them more often. I'm glad it was pretty much a non-event for you! I hope nobody in Mexico was hurt by it. My sons in Arizona felt it, it rattled stuff in their apartments.

hi dragon54u yes I heard from friends in Arizona that they really felt it and some of the swimming pools sloshed water out. I am glad too that it was just a mild rocking rolling feeling but that was a long minute, usually it is just maybe twenty to thirty seconds. I have not heardwhether there were people hurt in Mexico. shall check on the news.

I didn't feel it lol! My son did and he was telling me and my husband 'hey, the house is shaking, look at my blinds' and we told him he was crazy. It was very windy here and so we attributed the blinds moving to the wind, because the windows are not airtight plus we had the slider open because we were smoking ribs on the back patio. Anyway, not 20 minutes later there was a big thing on the news about this 7.2 earthquake! LOL!
