How do I get Banners on my Profile page?

I have noticed on peoples profile pages they have banners for the programs they are using. I'm still new here and was wondering how do I get a banner on my profile page for the site I would like to tell people about. I have tried adding a html sortie and putting the code in, but nothing shows up on my page after I do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.
