Should English classes be compulsory for undergraduates?

Nowadays, we witness an English craze in China. Numerous competitive training centers and teaching programs emerge one after another; as a matter of fact, such services to English learners have become a very profitable industry in big cities. In schools, children are provided with bilingual classes, and English learning then extends through primary and secondary school to university. For different reasons, many undergraduates have complaints about the requirement. What is your opinion? Thank you very much! hh

I agree with you.China should improve the speaking skill of the english teachers and take the speaking skill as half of the exam.I can easily get high marks on the english exam but I am fear of speaking it because there is little chance we can speak out.I am puzzled by how to improve my spoken english, that's a reason why I come the mylot too.

hi there, I can see you are Chinese from your words, and you are telling the truth. By the way, your picture is so cute-xi yang yang. You know it. What we need is just more and more chance to practice and never hesitate to speak with the foreigners, I mean the natives who can express with the native way and which will do us a lot of goods. Thanks for your response and have a nice day!

Guess what? Here in Philippines, we use English as medium of instruction from Preparatory (Pre-school) to Doctoral (university) and it is just our second language. But, we are lucky enough because learning English is the best foundation to be globally competitive. Now, many Filipinos are teaching English to Koreans, Japanese, Taiwanese, and Chinese. I'm proud to be one of those online English instructors. :)

Hi Shylambert, It's lucky that you take Engish as a second language in your country. English is required when we meet a job, but to be honest, most of Chinese students lack the skill to speak out, they are just for the exams. We Chinese learn English at least 8 eight years after high school, just for passing the exams and getting degrees. I am English major in college but still feel nervous when I taking to a native English speaker. By the way, what is the situation in your contry? Do students in high school use English freely? Thanks for your reponse!

I am also a Filipino. High School students are fluent in using English even pre-elementary students can speak well. The students are really exposed to the language because everyone speaks the language inside the school. English is not for the exams only.

In China, numerous competitive trainging centers supply much kinds of foreign language to learn, it's meanful for people who want to know foreign language, especially it's benefit for those workers who would like to learn. For my opinion, it is necessary for undergraduates to learn two kinds of language, because it was useful when you graduated and worked in the society.

Hi bettydeng5, The answer to this is definitely yes. However, the bad situation for undergraduate is they are suffering from the educatiional systems and don't know the very thing that they should grasp. English is neceesary for everyone here, but how many of them can use it pratically? That's awful!

I think learning English is necessary. English is the universal language and it is very useful everywhere in the world. However, one must not totally forget about his/her mother tongue. I am for preserving the culture while being exposed to the global changes.

Hi there, To totally understand another language, we must understand our mother language first, since the transaction towards two language is not only the words but culture. I use English every day and I meet new expressions which make me confused every day. We should keep learning it and it is a long way to go.

Students should not complain about the development. It's a development already because English is the universal language. You cannot compete globally if you don't know English. There are actually a lot of Asians who are businessmen try to learn English. They even paid much just to earn English. It's really better to learn during your school days than the postgrad...
