What do you understand by prayer. The dictionary meaning says it is a request to God. Why should prayers be considered a good practice.

I have to agree prayers are request to God. But for me they are more than just requests. I pray to thank God, I pray to praise God. Then lastly i pray to request forgiveness for my sins or mistakes that ive done. Its a great way to somehow communicate to God. Yes he may not answer directly but he speaks through my heart all the time. Its one of the moments where in im at peace, that is when i pray. Thank you for sharing this good topic and have a great day ahead of you

I agree with you. Prayer is a communication directly to God. I hate when people think prayer is just for giving God their wish list - maybe it's because they don't know what prayer really is. Prayer is for praise as well. I thank God everyday through prayer and ask for forgiveness. We have to take up our cross daily. God bless.

I would rather call it communication with God and under that umbrella everything gets covered - thanksgiving, praising, and asking which is praying.

You got that perfectly right, when people think that prayer is just for those wish of theirs thats when they start to make mistakes . Praying is like communicating to God, you give thanks, you praise and then you tell him your intentions as well, its a give and take thing.Sometimes other people tend to remember God in times of crisis alone.. which is sad. Thanks for sharing your views about this too faikeijames

I looked up the dictionary again to know if it is just a request or there is more to it. According to the dictionary the prayer besides, an act of petition, is also an act of adoration, contrition and thanksgiving. This set me thinking, when God already knows our inner thoughts, why does God expect us to make an explicit request for everything we need. Why can't he give us everything as he feeds the bird of the sky? He gives them to eat without asking then why this discrimination only towards us. Why does he expect us to earn from the sweat of the brow, whereas all other creatures get to eat with little or no effort. Is it because God had banished Adam and Eve from Garden of Eden, therefore, he expects that we must pray, adore and be thankful to him. Does he expect that we must always remain of fear of damnation? Jesus taught his disciples to pray, and he prayed often. God gave us two hands to work and same hands we use to pray. God gave us knees to stand upright and on same knees, we kneel in front of God in prayer.
In our daily life, too though our parents know what we need, yet sometimes we have to ask them what we need. We do not have to ask them everything. They give us the best things to eat, and best things to wear, they give us the best education and we don’t even have to ask. They give us toys too. Still we ask for things, which they might think are not good for us. For everything they do we show our appreciation by being good children, by doing well in our studies and making them proud of us. They do not expect us to adore them or thank them for everything we do. We call God our father, then in what way is he different to our parents. We need not pray to him for the things he is giving us freely. We need not even placate him by adoring him and thanking him at every twist and turn. However, since Jesus taught us to pray therefore prayer indeed are important. However, how must we pray?
Jesus taught us the Lord’s Prayer. We have to say, “Give us our daily bread”. Jesus himself had said man does not live by bread alone. At Matthew 4:4, it is written, “But he answered and said, it is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Jesus is the word of God; Jesus is the bread of life. God expect us to ask for Jesus. We must ask God in our prayer that He may reveal his presence among us. Next, he taught us to say, “Lead us not into temptation…” Matthew 6:13. Further at Mt 26:41 he said, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak”. Adam and Eve had succumbed to temptation and God had banished them from Garden of Eden. Through prayer, we have to seek God’s help that we do not fall into temptation.
Saying prayer everyday is a good thing. However, we must know how to pray. Lord’s Prayer is an excellent guideline. We must ponder over it, we would know how, and what we must be asking in prayer.

Down the ages prayers have meant to be all what you have said above. But in fact it is communication with God rather than praying. We call it the Lord's prayer but in fact if you look at it closely it is more than a prayer it is communication. While communicating with God there are so many aspects that come into being which include worship, thanksgiving, praising, and asking which I call prayer.

Prayer energy is the best energy out of all the energies in the world. When you pray, positive energy is generated. That will help to solve the problem for which you are praying, to get what you genuinely want, to give good health and to give you peace of mind. When you pray God, all the unwanted thoughts are removed from your mind and a tranquility prevails in your mind and heart. It is a pleasant experience to remain in that tranquility. When many of us pray for someone, the positive energy created is enormous and the results also will be abundant. That is why, when someone is sick, collective prayers are done.

I would call all this, communication. Under the banner of communication comes worshiping God, thanking Him, praising Him,and asking which I call praying.

If prayer means communication then why don't we just say that it is communication with God?

Yes it is. That's what I mean. There is a pattern taught by our religion teacher in elementary which is ACTS that means Adoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving and Supplication.

Well, yeah, that is one definition of prayer. But like the other comments have said, prayer is talking with God. You pray not only when you have a request from God. You pray because you want to talk to Him. You want to consult with Him. You want to tell Him of your day. You want to praise Him. You want to cry your heart out to Him.
Its a good practice because a life of prayer means you mainly have a big trust and rely only in God, which is what God wants. He really wants us to always talk to Him and rely in Him. He is our father after all.

Prayer is worshiping God! it is a personal communicating in our God and through this prayer we can talk our God by His presence we felt. for the explanation of dictionary they emphasize that when we pray we are requesting in our desires unto the Lord. we should not practice prayer but we must be put in our life that prayer is daily life style in every single minute in our lives.

Your dictionary meaning of prayer is exactly right. But another way of looking at prayer is the fact that it causes you to vocalize what you want in life or at least think about it. By praying we are allowing ourselves to realize those things that are important to us, which will cause us to work harder for them. And when you have your mind in the right place and are working with God amazing things can happen.
