Muslim Men Why Don't You Wear The Burka?

If the burka is such a great idea for women to wear, then why not for men? Why should women be the only gender to have to spend their day looking out of a little slit? One last thing, I know the easy out is, "Well the Qur'an only instructs women to wear the Burke." No that is not an acceptable answer.

I am not Muslim, and I do not criticize many of the beliefs of others, they are as free as I am to choose how, why, and most importantly WHERE they live.
This being said, I do have a small interest in religions, and I do make a little study of other peoples religious believes, I have a book, that takes a very unbiased role in describing the beliefs of all religions.
I will agree, to you to a point, that the Burka, is a kind of punishment, in so much as it is a determent they must endure because of the biases of the other gender. It is a garment used to enhance universal suffrage. It is worn, so that a Girls opinions are based on what she actually has to say, rather then the way she looks.
The book is the Usborne Book of World Religions. That is their unbiased view. It made sense to me, personally, I think if that is the reason it was to be worn, then all people should have to wear because, you know as well as I, that a girl would never give a very handsome guy, more credit because he is very handsome, and a guy would never let a pretty girl batting her eyelashes to allow him to favor what she has to say....
With appreciation of the pursuit of knowledge that resides within you.

Good point on the semantics their, I really just meant a pretty face. But, some burkas have a mesh screen to cover the eyes as well. Men, must be covered from Navel to Knee. For woman, dressing and acting modestly is called hijab, and not all Muslim women are required to wear a burka.
All people are given Agency, if they choose to use it. Sure, sometimes the consequences for choosing can seem to make it feel like you don't have a choice. You can do it my way, or you can die, someone might say, but you still have the choice. They can choose to leave, and if they get far enough, fast enough, not be punished for it I would guess. They are just too afraid they will get caught and punished to make that choice.
Yet, hundreds of thousands of people each day, choose to live their situations, and suffer, slavery, starvation, imprisonment, torture, and worse things. To get away from what they have and to attain something greater.
I am going to go quote from that book exactly what it says, seems I had it fairly wrong. I will quote the whole paragraph, you won't like what it says, but, that is your choice to be intolerant I suppose.
"In some places in the Muslim world, it is the custom fro women to live apart from men, and cover their whole body including their face when outside the home. This practice, called, Purdah, is said to protect women from unwanted male attention and to allow them to be respected for who they are not how they look."

okay im muslim and im a man my mother and 3 of my sisters cover 1 of them wears a hijab my motver cover everything but her eyes and 2 of my sisters cover everything even eyes but 2 of my sisters where mini skirts and tank tops (very islamic)now covering the face is not a part of islam as such as u only need to cover the hair legs arms and body. i am a muslim man and I COVER yes muslim men also should cover from there bellybutton to below the knee caps (i dont thik i have ever seen another muslim man cover before in my life) ANYWAYS my point being is woman chose to wear it and so do men covering she never be forced on ANYONE and islam should never be force on anyone as everyone has a right to chose what they do and how they live there lives and the true bases of Islam teaches this so dont judge islam as the true ilam was never like it is today and if the H.Z Muhammad (sallahu wae wasallem)could see it today he would cry as he loves us and prays for our forgiveness. i have seen people say islam is an old (backwards) religion and the only reason u may think this is because unlike any other religion it should not be changed even if u translate a Quran to english its no longer a Quran. but i really do not wish to say too much as i am not a Imarm or anything but please dont judge islam and brand it something bad as its the fundementists idea not Islam's

Nice question. Let's see if the Muslim men here can answer that by their own. I remember watching an episode in BBC World News discussing the changes that Afghanistan has gone through since the fall of the Taliban. How women were freed from Taliban's strict religious rule...

Qur'an does not mention the word Burka any where. It merely say, "For women; Cover your chest (24:31); Lengthen your garments (33:59) and for both sexes; The BEST garment is that righteousness and modest conduct (7:26).There is another word Hijab, which means veil or yashmak.Other meanings for the word include screen, barrier, cover(ing), mantle, curtain, drapes, partition, division, divider etc. The word “Hijab” appears in the Qur’an seven times, five of them as “Hijab” and twice as “Hijaban”. See 7:46, 17:45, 19:17, 33:53, 38:32, 41:5, 42:51. None of these “Hijab” words are used in the Qur’an in reference to what the traditional Muslims call today “the dress code for Muslim woman”. Hijab in the Qur’an has nothing to do with a woman’s dress code.Lack of self control in Muslim men led Prophet Mohamed to lay down such strict strictures. He did not observe the same lack of self control in women, therefore he did not instruct men to wear Burka. If women too had to lack self control we would seen even Muslim men wearing Burka today. There are men lacking self control in other communities too, but no other religious leaders instructed their women to cover their hair, face, and body with a veil.

Muslim women are beautiful far beyond imagination. They can easily shake any of the Muslim person's morality. Burqua protects women from Muslim man's lusty eyes. As long as they do not see them the thought of rape would not enter into their minds.

Boy, Gewcew, you're looking for a fight today... I think I know the answer though. Women are second-class citizens...their property. And as such, men decide what women will/won't do, and wearing a burke is one of the things their women will wear. Am I close?

I think people should wear what they want and what is acceptable in public. I've read about the burka discussion that's been going on here and I can say agree on the religious argument (it's a tradition).

Actually, men are instructed to dress as modestly as women. And also Burka or hijab is a neccessary part in Middle East not because of the religion, but for scientific reasons. As a matter of fact, this accessory has been in the Middle Eastern culture even before Islam came in the region. Its main reason is to save hair and skin from the harmful effect of the sun. Yes, it is true. Direct contact of the heat causes hair to become gray and skin's DNA to get distorted. Unfortunately, this distorted DNA can only be fixed through plastic surgery. I am not an Arab, but have lived there 8 years of my life in Dubai. I thought normal clothes were okay there, but I was wrong. A part of my leg's skin is damaged from their hot sun. It is now tough and dark, and I simply have to live with it since I cannot afford plastic surgery. My little sister and all other kids who didn't keep their hair covered while playing in school got gray hair!
So I will just say that the hijab or burka is a better thing to wear there. It is recommended even for tourists who want to save their skin.

If it's a religious edict, then saying the Qur'an only instructs women to do so IS the right answer even if you don't like it.
Wondering why it's like that in the first place is a good question though, do Muslim men really consider themselves so close to animalistic that that's necessary? Men in all countries and cultures seem to lack control when it comes to women, that's probably why many women like to wear shapeless baggy clothes after they've dealt with too many of those.
I think many men do like 'their' women covered so no other man can look at them but want to be free to attract other women by showing off themselves. (Is that sexist enough for you?)
Protection from the sun seems like a viable reason to dress in such a way but that wouldn't explain men's not doing so.

I guess muslim women hate to see men in burkas as the men would lose their appeal. Women retain their beauty when wearing the burka while men degrade their handsomeness and manhood when they wear a burka. I can almost hear the muslim man say, My wife want to see my muscles and macho body and she might go with another guy when she found me wearing a burka. I also see that the burka protects the women skin from the harm of the sun so it is more of an advantage than a disadvantage to them.

I completely agree, that is the response you would most likely get...i feel Islam is on of the most backward looking regressive religions in the world, it mostly preaches hatred and feels non muslims are not humans and the idea is to either convert them or destroy them.
A largely muslim world would be very difficult to live in......
