3D Films. What are your thoughts on them? Good or Bad?

I have just returned from the local cinema where I took my children to see the latest Disney/Pixar film "How to Train Your Dragon" in 3D. This was a pretty good film and I enjoyed the 3D effects but it cost twice as much as it usually does just because this film is in 3D! Not only that but the glasses hurt the top of my nose after having them on for so long. Next time I will take some foam to stick under them! I have noticed that pretty much all of the children's films are coming out only in 3D now so the cinemas are making twice as much money as they were. I just wish that they would give us the option of seeing it in 2D or 3D. The days of going to the cinema as a family and it being a cheap trip out are over by the look of it. We cannot even go as a family to see these family movies anymore as my wife cannot see the 3D effects. To her it just looks blurry. Have you noticed this happened recently in your part of the world? Do you like 3D films?

I haven't seen the 3d movies & i probably want because i never go to the movies anymore. Use to going to the movies was a good cheap entertainment for a family but it hasn't been that way in a long time.

Yeah, everything seems to be rapidly rising in price and they keep raising interest rates here too which is making it hard for me at this point in time!

I know what you mean. Cinema prices here have been rising rapidly over the years and I did not go much until they opened a cinema in my town that is owned by a smaller company and not one of the larger chains that we have here in Australia. Their prices are a lot cheaper than the other mainstream cinemas, but now that they are showing all these 3D films, they have made family movie going a much more expensive trip out.

Hi Rawbill, well i have never been to the 3D movie theater, i wonder how it is with those glasses on, many seem to complain about it, i wish i can at least have an experience how it is to watch a 3D movie... My dad went to see a movie with some other relatives of ours, he was saying it was a 4D! I wonder what that would be, i didn't ask him further, when i get home i wish to see what is meant by that, hope i have friends free so that they could come along...

Hi Voldrox. 3D movies are definitely worth seeing if you have not seen one before. I have never experienced 4D but from what I understand from friends that have been to a 4D theatre at a theme park here is that they have effects in the actual theatre as well as on the screen. By this I mean that when water splashes on the screen in the movie, they have sprinklers that turn on briefly so you get a little wet and seats can shake and things like that. This one here even has little things that come out from the bottom of the seats at certain times and tickle your feet. I am not sure if your dad experienced similar things to this or not.

No, I don't like 3D films at all. I think the 3D effects just look unnatural to me. Sometimes it looks good, but then I have to blink to get the picture back in focus and I get a headache. It's just a gimmick. Why weren't you able to see "How To Train Your Dragon" in 2D? I saw it in regular 2D just a little while ago. It was still a great movie, and the ticket only cost nine bucks! lol Usually the option to see a movie in 2D is still available, but you might have to go to another theater.

I am not sure if other places offer it in 2D but the cinema in my town is the only one and going elsewhere would take extra time and the cost of fuel and time together would probably equate to the same amount as going to the 3D here. Normal films were only costing $6.50 for adults and $5 for kids I think the last time that I went, but to go to the 3D yesterday it was $14 for me and ten each for the kids. The 3D effects do look unnatural at times but as I was seeing an animated film that is unnatural anyway that does not really matter!

3d films are good. but you can enjoy them only when they have some effects designed to enjoy also. i think this is good to see a 3d movie. but the option of glasses are not good. as i use glasses and i feel uncomfortable in wearing two glasses. what ever i have enjoyed 3d movies

My wife wears glasses too and she had lots of trouble viewing the films through two sets of glasses. It was still blurry for her even with the newer technology that we were told would work well for her. I am glad that you still can enjoy them though!

I love 3-D movies. They've certainly come a long way since Jaws 3-D! I thought the visuals in Avatar were amazing! they were so realistic that I found myself dodging projectiles and reaching out to touch the falling flower petals. I think a film with a great 3-D visual can help to carry a lacklustre plot, which I feel was the case with Avatar. The story was like a futuristic view of Dances with Wolves - nothing new or exciting, but because the visuals were so extraordinary, the movie was saved. I wrote a review/analysis. It's on Hubpages, if you'd like to read it.

I have not seen Avatar as yet. It did not really appeal to me as I am not really into futuristic science fiction films, but I must admit to being a little bit curious due to the hype surrounding it. At least they offered that in 2D as well as 3D here, which they are not doing with the kids films! They certainly have come a long way since Jaws! That film would have benefited greatly from the computer technology of today! Do you like Hub Pages? I signed up there a couple of years ago but have still not made any pages. I preferred Squidoo so I just continued to make lenses there.

I agree bill. Recently I had watched a 2D version of the film' Avatar". I should have watched the 3D version to enjoy the movie and get it in the true essence. but, the point is we had the options open. I haven't watched a 3D movie as yet and if I ever go for it I would just for the first time experience. Other than that I would not because of the cost ofcourse.

It is worth doing for the experience and the technology had improved a great deal since the last 3D film that I saw which was only about 5 years ago. I would recommend that you go to see one if you have not yet experienced 3D, but it is not something that I would want to do all the time. I found that after a while the novelty of the 3D wore off and I became used to the fact that it was like that and it just seemed normal. (except for the uncomfortable glasses of course)

I don't go to the movies for a couple of reasons. First, they are too far away and second, they are too expensive for me. I've also tried to watch a 3D feature and it was semi blurry...not fun at all. For that reason, I'm not really into 3D movies. I like them just the way they are I was headachy within 15 - 20 minutes. Also, the last couple of times I did go to see a movie with my ex, I fell asleep...such a waste.

Yeah, not really worth you going if you have to travel a long way just to fall asleep in a dark cinema. You can do that for free at home! A lot of people are saying similar things about the 3D movies still being blurry. The technology has improved a lot, but I think it still has a long way to go.

I don't like them myself. I always choose to go see the normal version, I did watched Final Destination 3D and I thought it was utterly rubbish and I didn't like the film either. I could take to the characters because they seemed very unrealistic despite this being one of the main films goals, get you interested in their background and keep you guessing. It very obvious who was going to get killed and the 3D movie wasn't 3D at all, I don't know if it was the glasses but it wasn't good.

I have never heard of final destination, but now that I have, I will avoid it. I think that some movies are well done in 3D, but most are just jumping on the bandwagon of the popularity of 3D and are not as good quality.

I like 3D movies but I agree that there should be the option of seeing it in 2D as well for those who don’t like or cannot afford 3D; I thought that most movies did come in both versions...I have never met anyone who can’t see 3D, that is interesting, it must be quite frustrating for your wife not to be able to enjoy the special effects. I haven’t seen How To Train Your Dragon and my daughter wants to go so we’ll head there pretty soon, I’ve heard that it’s good.

Hi Paula. Perhaps it just that the cinema in my town is not part of one of the major chain cinemas that they do not offer both versions. I am not sure. It is frustrating that the kids want to see all of these new movies obviously in 3D and we cannot enjoy them in the cinema as a family if we do it this way. It is a great movie though. You will love How To Train Your Dragon. It is typical Disney/Pixar quality and humour! Just a shame about the sore nose from the glasses at the end of it though! Take some bluetac to sit between them and your nose!

I have noticed that there are a lot of films that are being released as 3D movies, but I'm really not a fan of them. I took my son to see Shrek in 3D earlier this year and it was really nothing but a lot of problems for us. The 3D glasses didn't fit him properly and he wanted to leave in the middle of the movie because it was giving him a headache. I think that they could be a good thing, but it will require that they make child sized glasses for the movies that are geared toward children.

Yeah, the glasses suck don't they! I find that they give me a mild headache too. I think this is because they sit awkwardly on my nose as they have a weighted security device on one side of them which makes the glasses sit crooked on my face. This device makes the glasses safe from theft, but also very uncomfortable!

I have not seen this movie. I am not a movie goer. I would wait to see if comes on cable or rent from from netflix or something that is not as costly. I am curious to see though if you have to buy the glasses or will they send them to you when you rent the movie, lol.. It sounds like the movie was good for the most. AS long as children enjoyed, it was worth it. I like 3D films. Take care.

I do not think that these movies will be 3D when they come out on DVD, Bluray or available online as you would have to have the 3D playing technology I imagine, not just the 3D technology in the film and the glasses. I am not sure there? Yep, the children loved it so it was worth it, but it just makes it harder with the extra cost to take them as often to see the films at the cinema.

I love 3d movies though I generally have a problem with the glasses too :( We're lucky that it doesn't cost any extra to view in 3d here - we saw Avatar in 3d recently and it was amazing. I really enjoyed it. Wouldn't have felt able to do that if it was going to double the cost though..

Welcome to MyLot Debsgw. I left you a welcome comment on your profile page. You are lucky that you can view 3D at the same price as normal films. I hope that they bring the prices down here eventually. Where do you live?

hi RawBill1 I have watched A Christmas Carol last December. It was really impressive to watch it in 3D. In my local theatres you have the option whether you ll watch them 2D or 3D. Yes even in my country 3D films entrance ticket cost more than 2D. I think that it is a new way how movie makers can earn more money.

Hi ronaldinu. My wife took our children to see that movie late last year. Our kids liked it but my wife could not see the effects properly as she has bad eyesight and wears glasses. She said it was blurry and was disappointed as we thought 3D films might work better for her now with the new technology, but they don't. I agree that the movie makers are cashing in on this resurgence in 3D films.

When I saw Clash of the Titans on 3d I started realizing that for me, on live action films, 3d isn't that all exciting. There was one very short scene in Alice in Wonderland where all the spears were right in your face, for less than a second. All the rest of the movie could be seen regularly and all that extra dimension stuff isn't as exciting as it is in animation. I remember 3d drawn animation (gosh I can't remember when the last time I saw one, they are all that 3d modeling in 3d viewers, but I remember short little films exploiting the technology marvelously, getting objects right in front of your nose. I don't see that anymore, not with the live action and 3d modeling movies. I'll still see them on the IMAX screen, but I'm finding it a waste on money in standard theaters.

It certainly would be an experience to see 3D in an Imax theatre. There are not too many of those to be found here though. I do remember seeing short films that focused specifically on the technology of 3D many years ago. They were more impressive in a way than whole films that are in 3D now. Perhaps it is more impressive in my mind though, as it was a novelty at the time and not something that we are familiar with as we are with the technology now. There are only certain scenes that really benefit from 3D in films as the movies cannot be all about things flying toward you all the time, but I guess it is better than having a message flashing up on the screen which tells you to put on or take off your glasses now! I have seen films like that in the past!

3-D is back and bigger than ever and the new televisions have 3-D as their big thing. I pick and choose movies to go to and seldom go to more than one every couple of months. That way I am not going broke trying to see the latest one. I figure I can always see them in the comfort of my home - without 3-D - since I have no intention of buying one of the new televisions.

I only just heard about these 3D televisions from an earlier post in this discussion. That is amazing. I will probably get one in about ten years time! We only go to the movies every couple of months or even longer generally too, but we have been more often recently for some reason. I think it may have something to do with all of these new "must see at the cinema" films that have been released recently.

The 3d that were watching in the movies is like an ordinary 2d movie with your glasses on. The difference is just the background becomes 3d. I think it's better to watch a film in IMAX where it is like your in the movie. 3d movies are really not that bad, but if you want to splurge your money on 3d then you'd better choose IMAx not the ordinary 3d

We do not have any Imax cinemas anywhere near here except at a theme park which only plays the same two documentary films over and over again. You cannot access this screen just to see normal movies. I wish that we had a public one in our city as I have viewed Imax before and thought they were great. I have never seen a 3D film on one though. The closest one is about a 9 hour drive away and I am not prepared to travel that far to see a film!

There's nothing really much to rave about except for the graphics. I really hate wearing those 3D glasses. It's very inconvenient to wear it when you are supposed to relax and have fun. I think 3D is just their way to double their earnings from movie goers.

I think it is just a way for them to rake in the profits too and yes, those glasses are very annoying to wear! I found myself missing parts of the movie as I was fidgeting with them all the time! The graphics are good and I feel that this is the way that media is going with digital technology and being more interactive. I just hope that they keep good old fashioned 2D as an option for many years to come.
