I don't know if it's a bad habit or not but when I read something interesting or something with great relevance to my life, I can't help but underline it using a pencil. Before, I tried to fold the upper corner of the page but I felt that I am hurting the book more with this kind of marking so I just settled for putting my scribbles on it. I find it fulfilling to, after making those markings, I can easily reconnect with the book and get into a state of reminisce about why and what was I thinking about when I underlined those passages. How about you mylot peeps, what do you do?

I underline and i highlighted the book if that book is mine. If not I just write the passage on my organizer for me to remember it. I believe we are not hurting the book if that book is ours. For me putting markings there made me remember that there is something important in the book that made me realize something. We I see i highlighted something I know that should be remembered.

oh hello greychunny! yes I couldn't agree more, you have all the freedom in the world to write at the book, only if it's yours but if not, then do not. haha I remember seeing some notes on the library books which really gets me irritated because they (or we) just borrowed it so we do not have any right to scribe something on it. oh well. but I'm happy to know that I am not the only one doing it to my books. thanks for replying!

Hello grecychunny26 I like that you would only write or highlight the book of yours. I discover so many people not having this kind of concept, some would write on the book they borrowed from library, what a bad habit and behavior. I just don't know why some can be so selfish, they must think they are the centre of the universe. It's nice to know that you and I both insist only writing on our own books. Good day!

I used to do that but I stopped when I learned a can still sell old used books or give away as a gift to a friend. Underlining in books is not advisable except if you decide you will keep the book to yourself for life. Underlining makes the book look dirty, and when it become dirty, you can no longer sell it.

yes I agree with you magtibaygom. When you are up to selling your books, why highlight them right? I, myself buy some second hand books and I find it cute when somebody puts some lines in the book but I think I would not have that much patience when I finish the whole book and see lines all over. Some lines are fine but all over is not hehe so if I was to ask myself if I will sell my books, the answer would be no because I dont think people will buy it due to the many highlights all over

Hello mskzalameda Same here. I like to underline passages on my books. But I have to admit that I am not good at finding main points in any articles, I underline just because it looks like I have read something. When I was in high school, I read some books my aunt given me, she is a highly intelligent woman, she underlined on her books and I think it was so cool to do so, that's why I underline as well. But the point is I get used to underline, and I have to need holding a pen when I read. My sister once asked me why I held a pen when I read newspaper, I finally found out it becames my habit to underline and needed to write words on the content I have read. If the books don't belong to me, then I would write on the A4 papers I put on the desk. I have tried to put down my pen and read, I found out I can't read and it really took more time to disgest what I have just read. So I need to hold a pen and underline passages when I read important things. ^^

yes that is so true. holding a pen (or in my case a pencil) while reading has become a habit. But aside from the pen and book I am holding, I also have my dictionary and bookmark with me. hehe

I've never felt the need to underline anything in a book that I'm reading. Not to mention the majority of the books I get are from the library and they frown upon people writing in their books.

I'm sort of thinking that underlining passages makes the book look dirty but I can't help it. Writing the passage into my journal, or even somewhere else might eat some time, especially if the books is a very good read, I tend to underline some lines in every other pages so it would seem like a task for me. hehe but its good to hear that you prefer your books clean. :)

Hi, I used to underline all the important notes, concepts and meanings when I'm reading a book. Especially if I'm reviewing for a test. It's really effective for me, and it can retain to my memory. I bought different colors of highlighters to help me study. I used it as a habit to underline when I'm reading, and I've proved it efficiency twice, when I passed both major exams. For my personal books, I don't underline them. Instead, I copy my favorite line or passages and put it in my personal notebook. I had a collection of quotes and sayings taken from a book, movie or in the web.

I used to do that when I was young,I used to color the passage for reference in future but I stopped doing it with time. It is actually very useful when it comes to books related to education because in case there is a test it will be enough if we just run through the highlighted areas.

No, I don't. I don't like to write in books, even for reference. It'd just rather use a bookmark to mark the spot, that way I can keep books looking nice. Happy mylotting!

I like marking interesting quotes or sayings from books meaning to read them to my husband or family, but never get around to it......

Though it is cumbersome but I would rather take my pocket notebook and write the portion from the book that caught my attention instead of underlining it. For me, putting any form of mark in a book is not appropriate because they are damaging the condition of the pages.

Yes I do. But only if iam reading my bible. With other books, i prefer leaving them spotless so that they look new.
