I learned how to speak English when I was young. English is not my native tongue so I also get to have a formal education for it when I was in elementary, high school and in college. My job now has something to do with English cause I am an online English teacher but I feel there are still inadequacies in my skills. I am not really satisfied even if I am already good in grammar and pronunciation and other stuff in English cause I want more improvements. I feel like there is a need for it cause it will help me develop my career. What about you? Are you satisfied? If you are then why or why not?

My mother tongue is not English. So my schooling is in my own language. In college I faced problems coz lack of Grammar in English. I learned slowly by reading books and news paper and also hearing to English news. After that i joined in one German Company where i really learned a good English but German english and US english pronunciation has difference. They are good, they tought me a lot, how to write and communicate etc., but still i feel i donot know full language and I'm a learner. I am not satisfied with the language what i know. Certainly English language will help you in development of one's career.

I understand how it is when you really have to be good in grammar cause grammar is really very essential for people to understand what you are saying. English is already an essential part of our lives and learning how to speak and mastering the skills is not a very easy thing to do cause its not our native tongue. But we'll just have to remember to always improve on our skills.

So you have an online teacher? Well, I am an online english teacher and yeah I also love studying English with my students. I also encouraged them to learn English in so many different ways that are helpful and easy for them but in the most effective way possible. I dont think your English is poor but all of us needs a lot of improvements.

Let me start by saying your English is very good and clear, however you do make a number of errors which are common to those learning English from diverse language origins. This gives me reason to wonder if these errors arise because of the structure of English compared to other languages. all the best urban

Oh yes native speakers, myself included, often make mistakes. I meant only that the mistakes you make are of a particular kind that leads a native speaker to be aware immediately that English is not the mother tongue of the speaker. Look particularly at your use of 'get' and 'for' in the second sentence of your original post. all the best urban

English is not my native tongue and I actually I think there are even errors made by native speakers as well. I have experienced being with people who are native speakers and they also have errors. They know how to say the words and all that but for as who learned English as a second language, then its more difficult for us. That's why I need to improve with my skills cause its going to take me heights if I am going to do that.

satisfied, yes. and, lame as this may sound, i do think my english is good enough. but i would like it if i can improve more. i used to think my english is extremely good. but when i moved to an english speaking country, i realized that my english is very good in writing and listening, but i need time to process what i want to say. but after a few years living here, it has become a lot better. and it is satisfying to be able to converse with people without feeling like they don't understand me so english, or any language that is not our mother tongue, needs practise. and stop treating it like a subject you're learning in school, but like a skill you need to have in life

Its good to know that we are satisfied with our skills but our satisfaction should not be a hindrance for us to improve more. I can speak, read, write in English and I think good at it too but I also continue to improve.

Hi there! No i am not really satisfied with my English skills, i felt often that i need to develop my vocabularies more and more because mine was truly of the beginner side. Im not really satisfied with my skills for i ran out of words sometimes, i want it to be just like of my native language that I could converse what i wanted to say without stopping whenever I forgot to translate something. I do hope to became English proficient one day not like today that i am only a beginner. Thanks and have a pleasant day ahead!

I feel the same way. I am also not satisfied with my skills cause there are plenty of things that needs improvements. Its also not my native tongue that's why I feel like there are a lot of things that needs improvements. I want to be good at it and I want it bad. It all depend on us on how we are going to do it.

I also some concerns with vocabulary but I try to improve in it by learning new words everyday. Being an english teacher is tough, and I always encouraged my students to keep a vocabulary journal and saying that to them means I also have to do it myself.

I get disappointed with myself every now and then especially because I think I can write well but that skill is not apparent in oral so as a fresh graduate of journalism, I happened to grab this first job interview which requires good oral skills but I am a bit shy with my oral skills so I never get to use it in the actual interview. The end result of it? I did not get the job. You know, it's really hard to know what your weakness is and not have the guts to be your best at it. It's like, I know the problem but I can't face the solution, really. It is hard, I admit. Now, I'm keeping a note in my laptop (and to myself) to practice my English oral skills to have a better me and to bang that job I've been wanting eagerly. Like they say, no guts, no glory. So the best advice for us is to read some self-help books and of course, practice, practice and more practice. good luck to us! we can do this!

There are a lot of jobs in the internet that will help you practice your profession. I think its already a lot of advantage in your part cause you majored on that and all you need to do now is gain some experience and while you are gaining those experiences, you are also improving.

English is my native language. I also have A grades at GCSE level of English Language and English literature and a B grade at A Level for English Lang + Lit Combined course. So unless I wanted to teach the subject, I have adequate skills to get through day to day life, post on forums, write letters and emails etc. Even though my English is good, I will still continue to read books in order to learn more words since I doubt there is one person who knows the meaning of all words.

Same here! If a native speaker do that just like what you are doing then it goes down to the conclusion that people like us who studied English as a second language should exert more effort on how to improve in the their skills. Skills are really very important and even if we are already good at it, we'll just have to continue learning.

Well even if others say I am already good in speaking English I still challenge myself to learn more about the language. There is nothing wrong in improving it and I never think of myself better than others because I always leave for more improvement. As the going goes, no one is perfect so why pretend. I always see things as an opportunity to be better in what I am good at but it does not necessarily mean I have already perfected my skills in English.

I was also given the same comment but learning doesnt stop at that certain moment when you are already good at it. When you are already good then strive to become better until you become best at it. I also believe that I need to improve on it more cause it will really help in the future. There are more opportunities for those who are really good at it.

I guess I would say that I am satisfied with the level of my English communications skills. There are still times where I need help from friends when I can't come up with certain words. But I think it is getting better with the more time I spend on Mylot posting stuff.

Good for you! But we'll just have to remember that our satisfaction with our skills will not stop us from learning and improving. Its very important that we learn new things everyday. Though I must admit I dont wanna be a student anymore cause a students' job to study and learn things is way different than how I do it now though I am still learning. And its also good to know that you find mylot a good way for you to improve on your skills.

As far as I am concerned, I think i am not satisfying with my English skills here so much. For me, I will have an English text just the day after tomorro, which I think I will have little confidence to paas . So evryday morning I will get up early to pratice my English in order that O can pass the exam that follows tomorrow.

I know what you mean. I think you also need to improve on your English. Well, just like me, I am also improving and trying to learn new things everyday. Its really helpful if we do that cause there will be more chances for us to get a better job in the future or maybe even own our own companies if we are good at it and if we are good at what we are doing.

Not satisfied also. Since English is not also my native language, sometimes I find it hard to compose a sentence, I often ask Mr. Webster for words I can't understand. I wished that my parents initiated to talk to me in English even at home since I was a kid, and wished also that I studied in an English speaking school so that my English is better. And besides, I am not a good speaker and my diction is not good, I am better writing than speaking.

Grammar is really very important especially when it comes to making sentences cause there are tons of thing to consider. I know the rules but sometimes applying them seems to difficult and confusing cause English is such a crazy language. Grammar gets crazy and it gets crazier when you have vocabulary. Argh!

I think that we all have flaws and mistakes.English is also my 2nd language. It was not easy learning a language that you don't speak. All you need to do is believe that we are all capable of doing so and should have more practice..

Right! We are all capable of doing things and English is just a part of those things that we need to cater cause its also a part of our lives now. I always say the same things to my students cause a lot of them are feeling bad about themselves cause they think they are not good at it but I always encourage them to continue learning and improving.

well learning English is not that hard but the other terms Americans use got me thinking but it's not that hard, the thing is you have to practice the pronunciations of the words and i can't be satisfied with my English skills even though some say that im good in English,i want to understand more about the language the deeper meaning of terms some sort like that

Pronunciation is an easy thing to learn in English but the accent is not. I think its normal that we have different accents cause its just understandable cause its not our native tongue. I am not comfortable speaking in English and trying to imitate the way Americans say it cause its more important for me to be understood than have that nasal twang. Its just that I am not satisfied cause there are plenty of things to learn and to master. Its never too late to start anything though so that means we can always think of some ways that will help us learn more.

I encourage them to always speak the language everyday and its better if you are being supervised by a teacher who can help you correct your pronunciation and with your grammar. Send me a message if you want to talk to me online. I can help you with that. We'll help each other.

In our country, English is taught from elementary days until you reach college. Although I was exposed to english language when i was still studying, i feel that there still a need for me to improve my english especially when it comes to vocabularies. How i wish i were serious on learning this language when i was still studying because right now, I have no confidence talking people in english.

Right! It doesnt mean we have to stop since we know it already. We'll just have to continue improving and continue learning cause its only for our own benefit. Other countries are not being taught in their schools day that way so its really hard for some to learn English as a second language. English is my second language that's why I cant really tell for myself that I am very good at it.

English is not my native tongue, and most of my childhood is spent conversing in Mandarin, which is my mother tongue. I only got to get in touch with English when I entered school. Even though I have spent more than 10 years in school learning the English language, I wouldn't say I am proficient in English, but just adequate enough. However, I am satisfied with my English skill, but of course, there's always room for improvement.

Before I entered school, my nanny already taught me some english words and I already had an idea about the terms for some of the common things and when I had my formal education, I didnt have a hard time learning it anymore cause I already had an idea. It was of course difficult to study grammar but English became my favorite subject and I was interested in it so it didnt really give me a very hard time now that my job has something to do with teaching English to other people.

I grew up in the province where english was not so much spoken of. I remember my adviser and teacher then even lent me some books in english. But during that time I wasn't concerned very much and I was lazy to study english. I just left those books half unread. For me passing the subject and having good grades were enough. I didn't even try to polish my english skills. Now I'm having a hard time expressing myself in english especially verbally. I have poor listening abilities too when it comes to this language. I want to change career and apply in a call center. But I don't have the confidence to do so. Thank God we have Mylot where I can practice and polish my English.

I think your english is good enough to apply for a job in a call center but I really dont think that getting a job in a call center is a very good job to improve on your skills but getting a job as an online english teacher is better than what you have in the call center. Call centers can help you improve on your accent and pronunciation but being an online english teacher also have a lot of advantages when in it comes to improving not just in skills but also our personality cause you get to know a lot of people that will help you with that. If you need help, just send me a message.

english is my second language, and i'm not really satisfied with it. i'm quite good with listening, but for writing and speaking, not so much. when writing, i stopped a lot to think what to write, and when speaking, i got nervous and then stammer at the first time, but it got better to the end. in my school, english is really hard to learn, not a lot of people got good marks on english, and when they speak, they don't really pay attention to the correct grammar or pronounciation, so it's hard for me to learn too :((

Learning proper pronunciation requires a lot of attention from the learner and it also requires far more attention when you are trying to learn grammar. My students are weak in grammar and I think most people are but to be able to learn from it we should be diligent enough to do it. The most important thing to do is continue learning and improving. Learning is such an important process that we have to take for the rest of our lives.
