What will you do without electricity?

There are instances in my place of residence when there is no electricity for hours at a stretch.Repeated complaints to the supply company fetches no result and it is so irritating to wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself sweating in this heat and the AC is idle for lack of power.Almost every night we are witnessing this and it is really taking it's toll on us.Though we have generators and inverters yet it is extremely irritating to get up at the middle of the night and start your generator and then again put it off when the current comes back.Do you encounter such problems too?Why don't it share it with us.

for me, i go outside our house to find fresh some air, together with our neighbors, talking each other having fun. because we don't have a generation and i can't afford to by it.. but before i go outside i'll check first our lamp/candles to be in good place that i could not be down by mouse or a cat. because candles and kerosene is one of reason why there is a fire accident happen.

Fine so you spend some quality time with your neighbours and that's good.Socialising is a good habit. But I am interested to know what will you do if the power supply is disrupted in the middle of the night. Will you still go outside your house and socialise with your neighbours or do something else?

I would go crazy. I'm very dependent on electricity. I've had these problems before, but it helps to have a backup energy source, like a generator. Solar power helps too. and battery backed up power units.

Yeah true that all the alternatives suggested by you are good backups while I tend to choose generators.Solar powers are still too costly for someone like us and inverter or batteries needed to be charged up periodically which acts as some kind of a hindrance.

I couldn't imagine the picture of life without electricity. I used to encounter electrical outage when I was a young boy. Compared with that time, nowadays we rely highly on electricity. We do housework by various electrical appliance. We acquire fun from TV and PC games. We get the information we need from Internet. Without electricity, all of the above products and services would no longer exist, which would be a 100% nightmare!

Yes it is irritating. We've had power failures twice now. One yesterday and another one earlier. I just browse with my phone and participate here in mylot. It usually takes about two hours for the electricity to come back so it's not really a big deal.

In this hot and sultry weather having power cuts for even two hours is basically nothing short of torture friend. You can count the number of times you had power failure while we have lost count so you are a bit luckier than us I believe. Now what will be your reaction if you have power failures at the middle of the night?

This is a very timely question since for the past few days, we are having a rotational blackout so I become really irritated especially because when the rotational blackout hits the time slot of my favorite tv show, csi: miami AAAAARGH. hahaha but instead of stressing out about the loss, I decided to focus on a more helpful task to do: reading books. Now that I graduated from college, I am not busy anymore and having excuses of not reading my pile of books is not valid anymore so every time I have the free time, I read some books.
And oh by the way, the good thing about our rotational blackout, (yeah it also has a good thing, I just found out after reading your post) is that we don't get the blackout while we are sleeping. It mostly hits us during or after lunch so we can still manage a lil bit when it's extremely hot. heehee

I encountered several blackouts before when I'm sleeping and here's what I do: stand up, find a candle, light it and find a fan. heehee I hope it'll help you too.

Hi Naxous,
Have you asked your power company what is causing your power to go out so much? I have lived in places that lose power often but not every night. That is a bit much. One house that we lived in the power went out any time there was any amount of wind or snow. Trees were the culprit. Once we had the trees trimmed back away from the power lines it stopped happening so much. Is it just your place that loses power or do your neighbors as well?

Hi friend sorry for the delay as my net connection is down since the last 5 days. What amazes me is the fact that almost every time they know the reason but they generally don't undertake steps to rectify them.It appears as if the supply company has taken us for granted and their attitude shows that they are doing us a favour by providing electricity while we pay a hefty charge for it every month.

Hi sid no it's not my place that loses power in fact the entire locality faces power disruptions and on asking the supply company they told us that the High tension line trips and that is the result of the power failure. What I can't understand is why they can't get over the problem.I have been hearing this excuse since time immemorial.

Hi Naxous,
I rarely face that kind of problem here. But its still happen once in a while and it is totally not a good experience especially if it is happen during night. It is hot inside the house when there is no fan. We definitely can not sleep that time because of the heat and there are a lot of mosquitoes singing near to our ears.

Exactly the same here and what worsens matters is the false promises made by the supply department that there is a minor lapse and it will be rectified soon and then we are made to wait for 3-4 hours before the light comes back. There seems to be no respite from this and the only solution may be to beat up the officials of the supply department.

Here in our place it is a time bound program. The Electricity department will inform through Newspaper about their power shut down timings.Earlier it was 2 hours shut down but now it has been increased to 3 hours. Each month the timings will be changed. This month our electricity shut down timing is 12 to 3 PM IST. We plan accordingly. Happy myLotting.

You are at least fortunate enough that the electricity company makes it public.Do they also state the reason for the power cut?In our place it is a bit different. The electricity company don't feel the need to inform the common people and they shut it down when you need it most.

dear Naxous, I do really not usually meet the power off in my city. So sometimes when I meet the situation the only thing I can do is sleeping. When I get up later I always find that the light is on! And to you, my advice is you can talk with your families and your friends or you can go out to breath the fresh air!

No I don't mind sleeping on the floor.Frequently during the summers I do that to beat the heat to a certain extent but then without electricity the mosquitoes starts singing and carry on their regular exercise which is biting me everywhere and so that option has been ruled out.

What a pity! When I was in my college I was used to sleep on the floor coz of the hot weather in the summer. Would you mind sleeping on the floor to while away the time without your moving fan...

hi there naxous, you are lucky enough to have generators at home. With us,we need to deal with power interruptions almost every day,3-4x a day (8 hrs in day) and we uses only all naturals means like paper fans so the kids won't feel hot...It doesn't matter to us adults but we all feel bad for the kids but no matter how complaints we do,nothing can be done as it's not only us but everyone...anyways now we're getting used to it ,& we manage to use it to bond with each other, like we sing with the kids in the dark & play shadow games.

Yeah true that power failures helps us to remember the fact that once upon a time mankind lived without electricity and believe me whenever I tried to do that it gave me some kind of satisfaction..haha!I have a generator for my dad who is a patient and can't leave without power supply.I can understand the pain that you go through but unfortunately there seems to be no remedy and you are right it is better to get used to it than getting irritated or complaining about it.Thanks for your response.

Power cuts are rare where I live but they're really annoying. In the UK culture is pretty much 100% reliant on electricity (unless you like sports which I dont) so when there's an outage I have nothing to do at all... And I never remember to buy candles

i guess it's really such too much hassle for you especially to your dad who need the electricity for his treatment..We will just continue to hope that this will be over soon..but i bet it won't...as they have already informed us it will be on going until July.
Hello enterthehole,
you are so lucky to have rare power cuts...we usually don't experience that before...our power interruptions just happened recently & the fact is it in regular basis....3-4x everyday ( 3 hours every power interruptions) & they have said it will be going until month of July...

We usually experience power outage here in my City. And i really hate it when we don't have electricity. It is really boring, and feels so hot without electricity. Electricity is my life. Without it, I just don't know what to do. Our city once experienced two days straight of power outage. It was like hell. Cellphones didn't have battery, television were off, it was so hot that I had difficulty sleeping and it was so dark. It felt like the end of the world. I hope I wouldn't be able suffer from that long days of power outage ever again.

When you experience power shortage then do you get in touch with the supply company? What's their reaction?Indeed it is almost impossible to live without electricity and the people who are at the helm of such companies fails to understand our problem that's makes it more irritating.

Sorry for the delay as my net connection was haywire since the last 5 days.In my city they generally receive the phone as they have a call centre but all they do is to assure that the power will be restored at the earliest. However most of the time their estimate don't work and we face power cuts for longer periods.

Or if theres going to be a problem about electicity. It will affect my job, my way of living and the way i do most of the things that i do. Yes i will survive but its going to be a very tough fight indeed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and question my friend

Friend nowadays we all depend upon electricity to a great extent.Gone were the days when man used candles and stones to build up fires.Nowadays life without electricity is impossible to lead and no matter whether we use a lot of electronic gadgets or not we can't even perform our day to day task without electricity.

You suffered a lot my dear friend and let me tell you that if I was in your place then I would have definitely moved out of my house to reside somewhere else where there will be light. You have great tenacity and patience buddy.Even the thought of something like that happening right now makes me sick. But let me tell you that my maternal uncles stay in a remote village and they experience almost 14-16 hours of power failure regularly. They all have inverters but they don't get enough time to charge the batteries and therefore they are bound to suffer. But your situation was unique and I have never heard of anything like this before. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Yeah i agree, let me share you what i experienced 4 years ago, our village had a problem with the electric company that serves us.And because of that we suffered almost 9 months of blackout no electricity at all thats 9 month lol .We used battery operated lamps at night and in the morning you wont be able to hear any radio, television or any kind of electronic gadget at all. I think thats the worst part of my life too. Can you imagine something like that happening right now?

Im in the USA we do not have much of a problem with that. Only when there are storms. That happen a couple times this last winter. Imagine having no heat in the winter.
The problems i have now are the house owner i rent from often doesnt pay the bills. Presently we have had no water for three days now. My rent is paid so it really irratates me. Ive been here awhile and many times its either the internet, electric or water. he collects rent from 3 and sometimes 4 different people and he works. So i do not know what his problem is. All i know is im tired of it and want to move now. I will be moving ina couple of months either to my camper or an apt. I just cant take this anymore.

I didnt mention before but he hasnt had a garbage service for quite awhile either. Both trash contaioners are full inthe frony and the shed at the side of the house has trash piled up very high behind it. Now hot weather is coming and its really gonna staert stinking more tan it already does. I know i dont wanna be here when neighbors start complaining and police show up.
Im eally favoring the camper idea. With some solar power hooked it it will be very nice.

What you do with your hubby during power failures can be done by you even when there is light.Just switch it off and then ..However I am sorry friend that I am not as romantic as you are and in the middle of the night if I am asked to get up and romance with my hubby then I will prefer to divorce her rather than remaining a married couple with a lunatic for the rest of my life. Thanks for your response.

probably, i will buy a genset. i simply cannot drool over the lack of electricity. i have to do something about this important utility. i do have to take action. but if it just temporary, i sure will suffer through it, the inconvenience, i mean... for my computer to stay running, i'll probably buy a ups to keep going, if the power failure comes regularly... if it's persistent and goes long, i'll solve it with a genset...

Hi Naxous. Just like you we have our share of "brownouts" or power interruptions. It may occur at any time of the day or night for an average of 2 hours per day. Some causes may usually be justifiable like technical problems at the power plant, or demand exceeds the supply. Nonetheless, the discomfort and the inconvenience caused by these power interruptions is indeed a test to our patience and evidence to our dependence on electricity. But we are a resilient people and since this has become a common occurrence, we have learned to adapt and make do with what we have. We have our hands and a piece of cardboard to fan ourselves (LOL), and businessmen and rich people have generators to produce the electrical power for their needs. At first, one could swear to the heavens for such bothersome exercise most especially at night being disturbed and awaken from the heat. But in time you'll get used to it by having lots of patience, my friend. Remember it is not entirely the fault of the power company, not human error. It is the price we have to pay for progress, increase in population, hence increase demand or could be caused by environmental factors. Who knows.

Oh no. My point is since the power failures are getting to be commonplace and caused perhaps by human errors or natural factors (force majeure), it is a given that the power companies are supposedly doing the necessary repairs or adjustments to come up with enough power generation. No amount of complaints or stretched nerves or patience can rectify the situation as I said repairs and preventive measures could already be implemented. It is for us the consumers to just have more patience and to make do with the situation by having whatever alternative means to alleviate the discomfort. Power loss is income loss to the power company and I don't think they will neglect their duty to the consuming public to provide enough electrical power supply.

Right friend I got your point but don't you think that the power supply needs to make suitable arrangements in advance to prevent power failures from happening and in order to reduce or nullify the demand supply effect? The population will increase and going by your logic it means that some day we may have to face 24 hours of power failure and even then we are going to blame ourselves and not the supply department? The electricity company cannot neglect it's duties and at the moment they are doing just that.Remember there are a hundred reasons for not performing a job while you need only one good reason to perform it and that is something lacking. Thanks for your response.
