Hi, 2D is two dimensional. Everything you see that might have only two dimensions, viz length and breadth are 2dimensional objects. A close example would be the portrait that is hanging from a wall. You can see that there are exactly two dimensions, the length and the breadth. Now if a television set (not the LCD, but the old models) is hung, you will certainly sense a 3rd dimension (apart from length and breadth). This new dimension is the depth. A rectangle is 2dimensional, but a cube has 3dimensions. You can draw a cube on a paper. You can't make it 3D that way. But when you make a cube with small pieces of that paper it takes 3D shape. I don't mean to confuse you, but there are many more dimensions than these 3 dimensions. God bless you

Well I am flattered. Actually it totally depends on the co ordinate system through which an object spreads itself. If it has 2 axes viz, x and y, then it will be called a 2dimensional object. Similarly for objects described with 3 axes x, y and z, will be called 3 dimensional. Now the 4th dimension is often considered to be time. But there can be as many as 16 dimensions, or even more. Thanks

I would like to add one more thing to conclude. The movies we generally see are 2D. The sense of 3 dimensions is usually created by the projections in both or our eyes. Many objects will loose its 3 dimensionality if they are observed with one eye. The same law of physics is used in holography and in 3D movies, to create an illusion of 3 dimensional objects. It seems that you are actually involved in the movie, it feels as if everything is happening around you. That's 3D.

everything we watch on screen or on tv are 2D, that is, they have only two dimensions. but for watching 3D(three dimension) movies, we have to put on special goggles to have the feel that the movie is happening right around us, that is, right in front of us, beside us, behind us, etc. we are not just watching the movie in a distant screen like in theater or on tv. it's like we are in the middle of the movie itself. it is a whole new experience. but i haven't watched one myself.

we can watch a 3D movie in 2D or as regular movie as well, but the reverse is not true. in order to watch a 2D or regular movie in 3D, we need to upgrade it using some special software.

Hi DL... There are 3 axes... The entire world is imagined to have X, Y and Z axes. 2D films or animations have only X and Y of them. e.g. Tom and Jerry or any show on the TV... 2D shows have only length and breadth, if I may say so... Have fun!

Oh my Mr. Pearl. Where were you when I needed to pass science? You are a genius! Unfortunately I havent a clue about axes. I do however think that that kind of talk is incredibly attractive. There's nothing better than a man who knows what he's talking about. lol Keep on Trust me the ladies love it!!! Happy Lotting dl

Hi DL... I am not a genius! And certainly, don't deserve so much praise. I feel like blushing . I know ladies love this kind of talk. Thank you for so warm and lovely compliments, though... I have studied science and then computer science. So I know quite a few things, not a lot! Thanks again... Have a nice time! Happy Lotting...

2D has two dimensions (height and width) so they are flat. So for example a square is a 2D shape. 3D has three dimensions (height, width and depth). So for example a cube is a 3D shape. So in terms of films, films have always been in 2D. They are flat, nothing jumps out the screen at you. They have never made a point of this since all films were the same. However now that 3D film have came out, the films where you wear the glasses and things appear to jump out the screen. The cinema companies need to tell the audience if the film they are watching is 2D or 3D. If I film does not specify whether it is 3D or 2D then it is a conventional 2D film like you are used to.

Boy do I feel dumb! It is common sense. I thught it had to be more complicated. Then again I tend to make mountains out of molehills! lol Thanks for sharing and explaining the intricate yet simple details of the movie business, dl

If it's used in a movie then it;s talking about animation techniques. the Alice movie is an example of a 3D animation i think while 2d is how bugs bunny looks like. I hope i got this right. hmm.

2D mean 2 dimension like picture or painting. 2D movie is a regular movie you see on TV or theater. 3D movie if you use special glasses you feel in that story, the movie seem alive like in real live. 3D movie usually make for movie thats segmented for kid so the kid feel involved in that movie.

i believe 2d is more or less one-dimensional,like standard tv.

2D is 2-dimensional, meaning that is has two dimensions width and height. 3D is 3 dimensional, meaning it has width, height, and depth. Therefore if we watch a 3 dimensional movie, things will seem to walk towards us and even seem as if they are coming out of the screen. But special eye-glasses need to be used to watch it. It is an optical illusion of course. _Derek

hi dloveli I think they mean the ordinary movies we are used to seeing that only have two dimensions and we do not need those uncomfortable glasses in order to see the effects of three dimensions. D just stands for dimensions.

2D films are just your normal everyday films and TV that we are all familiar with watching. In art, 2D means a drawing or painting and 3D means sculptures or pottery or something that you can see all the way around. 2D you cannot as there are only 2 Dimesions: Height and Width. In 3D you have Height and Width, but also Depth. I currently have a discussion regarding 2D versus 3D films. http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2290177.aspx

Thanks Bill. I kind of figured it out after reading some of the responses. I never realized how intricate a movie could be. I think I took for granted all that goes in to making a cinema movie. Happy Movies dl

2D is two dimensional viewing of a movie. This is the traditional viewing format in which we've been watching movies for as long as I can remember. The 3D format is a three dimensional format where it appears that the images are not stuck to the screen. It is made to make the movies that you are watching seem like they are far more alive than appear to be otherwise. That said, I have yet to invest the extra money to see a movie that is in 3D.

2D means two dimensional such as normal cartoons or most of what we watch on on the television. 3D three dimensional movies look real
