When we talk about beauty, we always encounter this famous quote. But honestly speaking I don't even know what this means. You may laugh at me and call me dumb but I really don't know. I'm confused with the word relative. Can you help me mylotters to better understand this statement? What is really the point of this?

Beauty is Relative. Relative means subjective. Subjective means nobody is 100% right. Relative because people see things differently. Like: I love pistachio ice cream and you may say it you don't like it because of the color or the nuts. I hope you understood this because this is the best way I can explain this.

OH now I'm starting to clear this issue. So, relative and subjective are just synonymous. Thank you for giving me that explanation joedollarhuat. If I would explain it in my own words, it's like a matter of perspective? We view things differently. hmmm..Now I'm getting it. Thank you so much.

hi gambamarcela It simply meand that beauty is relative to how the person really is, is she or he a kind, loving, considerate person or a nasty tempered unpleasant person. as beauty is preceived as beauty does, if the so called beautiful person has a mean horrible temper her outer beauty is not precieved as beauty as beauty to be real beauty must come from within as well as outside.

Ah. So you are referring to inner beauty. What is seen inside makes a woman beautiful. Thanks for sharing your piece hatley.

It is an odd phrase isn't it? I think it means that what one person or culture finds beautiful may not be the same as another. Some countries, women are considered beautiful and sexy if they are very plump or quite fat and yet other countries, one can't be thin enough.
Relative is a word that means in relation to or comparison to. For example, in the USA, many men consider the classic beauty to be a woman with blonde hair with blue eyes and very thin. Many other countries would not consider that beautiful.
I saw a wonderful program on Africa about a tribe where very long necks are considered to be the most beautiful part of a woman so the women start wearing special collars of metal coiled around their neck to make it grow. They start this when the babies are quite small and as they grow older, they add more coils so their necks are much much longer than in other cultures. The men in this culture would likely find a blonde with blue eyes who is very very thin and a regular neck to be rather ugly. And most American men would feel the same about the women with the gracefully very very long necks.
To me Beauty comes from within. Even the most beautiful of women will age and much of that beauty will be gone. Hope this helps abit! Take good care!!
