I think that a sales consultant it is the same thing as a salesman, you may also have the privilege of being the customer service representantive as well but I am not sure.
Here is a link to explain in further detail!

Sales Consultant is another word for "salesman". The sales profession made it sound better, instead of being salesman, the title "sales consultant" sounds better probably because, it is customer centric. The word consultant also means "expert". As a sales consultant, you are expected to be an expert on the product you are offering. It is also expected the customer will learn a lot from you, as an expert. Assuming the customer has a particular problem or need, you come to your customer as an expert problem solver or solutions provider, hence the word "consultant".

A sales consultant and a sales clerk are very similar. The sales consultant will be asked to assist the customer in finding the correct items and assisting the buyer in any means in order to complete the sale. A sales clerk can also perform these task but would not have as much knowledge about the product as the consultant.
So as to if you are deserving of the job, it all depends on if you have knowledge in the items you are going to sell. You will only improve with time by doing the job and learning the products better.
