Can I spend a commemorative 25 euro coin?

I recently purchased a 25 euro coin, it cost me £6 so I was really pleased when I got it. It's descirbed as a 'Scarce 1996 pattern 25 euros'. I read somewhere that pattern coins are sort of trial coins, and may or may not be produced as coinage. I'm not sure whether or not I can spend this, it does say '25 euro' on the coin, so I pressumed if it said this on it then that is what it's worth. Anyone with help or information would be good.
