When your mind is blank on spelling

I am the type of person that when it comes to typing, writing etc and i forget how to spell a word i tend to think of another word that means the same that i can use instead of trying to spell something i am not sure of.Do you tend to replace a word that you have forgotten and do not know how to spell with another word that means the same.

NO I don't replace it, I look it up. See when that happens is the ultimate time to learn and get it right. Don't dodge it, face it.

I have just been told by a friend that i have a word checker on my phone,so perhaps in the future that is what i will use.I think you are right about looking the word up,but everything takes time so to just change the word sometimes also helps.

well using the spell checker on the text field is so easy not much work involved. Do you know how to apply it?

I know what you mean.I find that when talking to someone on the phone even about one of my children i know what child i am talking about its i go through the list of their names until i get the right one.I hate it when you know what a persons name is but you just can not remember no matter what.

no.. if i cant be sure if somthing is spelled correctly.. it bugs the crap out of me, so i grab a dictionary and look it up (or if im online, head over to websters.com and do the same) and while i might forget certain rules such as i before e except after c and if it sounds like a etc etc etc.. im usually a pretty big stick when it comes to myself and spelling. words are a passion for me, always have been, and i spent alot of time as a kid simply reading the dictionary to learn new words i could use. .

Event the best spellers need the dictionary. Dictionary is a very important tool in spelling problems. I am a teacher but i still need the dictionary to make sure I haven't misspelled or misused a word. My computer is also equipped with auto-spell-check so once there is a red line on the word, it is very easy to detect that it is a misspelled.

Oh right, i know a pc has the dictionary built into it so to speak, but i am not that great with a pc,so there is no such lick that i will ever find it on here to use it.

Trying to find the dictionary on a pc or laptop is a no go for me as i can barely work bits out on it now, lol.I find it alot easier to change the word rather than to struggle getting it right or thinking did i spell it right or not.

I am a really good speller, so usually that is not a problem. If I am typing either in Word or on my browser, usually they will offer to correct my spelling if I am wrong. I often have to go back and make sure I have not just used the same words over and over, though, as that does not sound very good.

I had to laugh at your doing that! No, I look the word up online to check the spelling. But when I am speaking, if I do not know the correct pronunciation of a word, then I will use another word.

I have always been good at spelling, having been raised in the phonetic means of education and infused with the thought that what I write reflects on my character and that of my family. This is an old-school way of thought and one that I think we could benefit from now.

I do the same thing. It seems more frequent when I am tired and my brain just doesn't want to work. I keep a dictionary by my computer, and sometimes I look up how to spell the word. When I was working I was a pretty good speller. Now not so much, and I don't trust myself. I can usually tell if a word doesn't look right, it's not spelled right.

I have rarely this problem. My spelling is good in my own language, and when I have a doubt, I check a dictionary. I have more difficulties to find a synonym to avoid to repeat the same word : I have always a thesaurus near my hand. You have a thesaurus in your head, and I have a dictionary : what about a writing partnership ?

I do this too, I have never been a good speller. I have trouble saying a word, so that can lead me to misspell the word. I keep a word check with me. I look up the word and can find out how to spell it.

hi jugsjugs I used to do that too but then my son put mozilla firefox on for me and it has a lovely spelling checker that not only underlines your misspelled word but gives you the correct spelling, and that's so darned neat, Iused to be a good speller but lately I have come up empty at times so Ijust use my trusty spelling checker.

Hi, jugsjugs. I may do thus from time to time. But most of the time, I will just use the word that I am trying to spell. I will just spell it the best way that I know how to. Especially, when I can't think of the right word to use.

Hi jugs, it happens with me too, i forget the word, and sometimes it feels hard to search for an alternate word which closely fits into relation with the word you were going to say or type.. I sometimes get irritated when that happens as i find difficulty in finding some other word, and it also matters coz the word you were going to say seems to the most effective and it's like other similar words will not fit in instead, so i wish i could recall that word soon.! ..

I tend to rephrase my sentence when I find myself in trouble because of a single word that I forgot how to spell but if I'm not that lazy I will use the search feature first before proceeding to post my response
