I am not a kid anymore but I wasn't able to escape from my mannerism.. nail biting.. Do you know anything I could do to keep me from biting my nails aside from having my hands tied.. lol!
Seriously, it is so awkward to announce this bad habit.. but I need help...

i have one tip for you... Paint your nails! paint them pretty. I guess that would somehow stop you from biting your nails. Aside from surely ruining your nicely painted nails when you bite them, the taste would be awful. Those two things might serve as a hindrance for you from biting your nails. I suggest you try this and I hope that this will help. It won't hurt you if you try. :)

wipe nail varnish remover on your nails because even after you wash your hands with soap you still get the varnish taste

If u really want to quit just use some willpower & do it. I use to bite my nails years ago. It's like anything else just use some willpower. Good luck.

Chew on a gum. Maybe that'd work. Or wear a pair of gloves.

First we need to know why. Are your fingernails uncomfortable? What state of mind are you in when you do it; angry? nervous? depressed?
One method is to make a chart. Label two columns "Continue" and "Quit," and two rows "Good" and "Bad." Then you fill out everything you can think of in all four areas.
Example:
What is Good about Continuing to bite your nails?
Don't have to trim them as often
I'll continue being comfortable doing what I always do
What is Good about Quitting?
I won't be as self-conscious in public
My fingers will look better being trimmed with the proper instruments.
I will feel very good about myself conquering this baffling addiction.
What is Bad about Continuing?
I'll probably damage my finger one day after being the most stressed
I'll continue having low self-esteem
What is Bad about Quitting?
I'll feel uncomfortable not doing what I'm used to.
Of course your chart will be different. It has helped many to stop whatever activity they want to be rid of.

I am pretty much still a nail biter as well. However, I am finally getting to the point that I am able to stop the habit that I've had for a very long time. There are a combination of things that are helping me to stop the habit. First of all, I am noticing that nail biting has caused a lot of damage to my teeth and I don't want to hurt them any more than I already have. In addition to that, I've found that if I keep my nails trimmed I am a lot less likely to chew on them.

hi sharlionse,
there is one which i used many years ago on my kids, non-toxic and non-greasy. but sorry i can't really remember it's name. it works because it's terribly bitter the moment it reaches the tongue. maybe you would like to ask the pharmacist at the nearest pharmacy.

i used to have this habbit aswell. it was really bad. but i managed to purchase this thing like nail paint except it was clear and had a horrible taste that no one likes. this worked really good and lasted for a few days before having to put more on. if you cannot find that in a chemist you can also use nail varnish remover, this will last for around a day before having to apply more

elow sharlionse. maybe i can share with you why you have that kind of mannerism. my high school teacher once told me that nail biting is result of too much thinking. unconsciously you begin to bite your nails.like you, i have that kind
of mannerism too, when i was in grade school til college. it's very embarrasing everytime other people see my hands.i only stopped this kind of bad habit when i have my first suitor in college.i said to myself, this habit should be stop. it really deteriorate my confidence.so the best suggestion i can give to you is self determination!

I know a friend also who has a habit disorder like nail-bitting. She does this thing when she is stress, bored or even nervous. She often gets embarrass when she unconsciously bite her nails. Sometimes she ask us to slap her when we caught her nail-bitting. Lol that really hurts, she cant control herself doing that thing. But she went to some health specialist and started taking medication.
I suggest you better keep you hand occupied, cut your nails short so you wont get tempted to bite and see some health specialist. I hope this will help.

No it's not a bad thing to announce that you have a bad habit. Most of us have some type of bad habit. Maybe it's your nerve that's causing you the problem. Have you checked with your doctor? If you keep your hands busy doing somthing then you may be able to stop. Whatever you like to do with your hands, try that and see what happens. Or, go learn how to do some kind of craft that you think you can enjoy and that might help your hands stay busy.

There is stuff called "no bite". You get it were you buy nail polish. There may be other brands were you live, but they will have similar names. Paint your nails with it. I used it when I was kid to stop biting my nails. It works. It tastes horrid. Any time you put your hands in tour mouth you will immediately take them away. It tasted horrid. After a while you will find that you have stopped biting your nails.

Hey sharlionse! The best thing to do for biting nails is to keep
them polished! Even if you just use a clear polish that will do
it! You will find the taste so terrible that is will definitely
keep you from even thinking about putting your fingers in your
mouth! I was never a nail biter! I always had long, strong
beautifully polished nails all my life, that is until about two
years ago when my nails started to split and stop growing! I am
older now and something must have changed in my body because I
had nothing but stubbs for nails! They break all the way to the
botton and it is driving me crazy! I want my beautiful nails
back or I am going to be forced to get those fake ones and I swore
I would never do that! And you think that you have problems!

Put on nail extensions like acrylics nails, or gel nails, it will make it harder to bite.
There is a reason why you do it though. Whats bothering you, this is a compulsive behavior. Think about it when you are biting your nails , what are thinking or doing at the time you are biting your nails?

I heard that people who has some deficiancy will tend to bite their nails. So those people should consult a Doctor if they feel its time to think about it .
