What do they use the initial investments in great websites for

I read about Facebook and Twitter and was shocked at the investments made in such sites early on. If I made one percent of such investments from the internet i'd consider myself most successful. What do they use the initial investments for? Advertisements? or what?

it is not easy or cheap to put a website like that together. and yes you need to get the word out about your site. and all of this cost money. what is great about those sites is once it catches on, wow the money that these guys make is out of this world!!!

earlier they were having the idea and they know that this idea can run well. but there is a time to bring the big number of users.
it is also like any other business. which does not come with any guaruntee. but if it is successful then there is not a huge running cost and big earning.
