I was made to believe that fruits as desserts are to be taken after a meal but it seems that what I have been doing all this while is incorrect, at least according to some health experts. Now these experts say that fruits should be eaten on empty stomach and not after a meal. I am a little confuse as I have all along been eating my fruits after every meals. To add to your knowledge bank this link http://www.pyroenergen.com/articles10/fruit-facts.htm have something to say about eating fruits for health.

hi zandi,
i used to eat them after meal. but what an idiot i had been. after reading lots of articles, the discussions here in myLot and talking to friends, i'm eating them before meals now. so we change our strategy. no food on the table except fruits at least 30 minutes before our meals, if there are fruits. thank you for the topic because it keeps reminding me. have a nice day!!!

I have read about this also, but what I know is some other experts are disagreeing to this statement also. Well, as for me I have no particular time to eat fruits. I didn't mind at all what is the proper way or time to eat them. Sometimes, I eat fruits alone, sometimes it's before the meal or after. Whatever suits me, as long as in moderation, because whatever that is too much is bad.

yeah, eating some fruits after a meal is our stereotyped habit, but recent studies really indicate that it was not healthy. However, each person has its own idea, we don't need to obey anything that someone called expert said. We will have a better health as long as we have a balance diet.

I have found a discussion with a Topic similar to yours, Titled
The best time to eat fruit;
The following discussion may be helpful for you as well.

From my experience, I have learned to eat fruits long before other foods and eat them alone. At least 20 minutes before other food or at least three hours after you have eaten.
This is called food combining.
The reason for good food combining is because if other types of foods are added, the fruit can easily ferment in the tummy, causing gas and such.
So eat well enough in advance of other foods, to allow time for the fruit to digest.
This link explains it better:
Food Combining

Here is an interesting food combining chart

I find that the best time to eat fruit is in the morning.
I let it digest before eating anything else.
Usually at lunch and then I may have a salad.

Hi zandi, you are welcome and the links are definitely well worth reading.
Food combining can help us reach and maintain healthy insides.
Perhaps even extend our life as then we wont be taxing our digestive system as much if we otherwise don't combine properly.

hi! i have read the same some time ago. somehow made sense to me to eat fruits before a meal. the idea was that if we eat a carbohydrate meal (that usually lasts for about 4 hours in the digestion process) followed by fruits (that usually lasts 1-2 hours in our stomach), sometimes fruit doesn't sit well because it spoils whatever we have eaten and may result to an upset stomach or too much gas production.
whereas if we eat fruit on an empty stomach, it fully absorbs the water, fiber, vitamin and mineral content of the fruit. the enzymes we also get from fresh fruits helps provide us with a healthy digestion.
plus i think if i eat fruits first, i become full much faster so i don't need to eat a lot of carbs for the main meal. hehe

no harm was ever mentioned. hehe they just pointed out that if we do fruits first, it paves the way for other foods. fiber and enzymes promotes healthier digestion and somehow cleanses the colon before we get on more food to be digested.
depends on routine and lifestyle i think, as well as preference.
have a great weekend!

Hey, don't you think it's time to eat what we want when we want???
An article dosesn't mean a thing. If you've eaten fruit after a meal with no ill effects, then continue doing so.
It's still your choice. As long as you feel ok and DO eat fruit, who the devil cares when you eat it??
Life is just too short to allow an article to mess you up !

I never heard of that before since I would assume that because fruit is sweet it should be treated like a dessert...of course some fruit "desserts" I would think would be better after a meal. I can see the logic though maybe about eating fruit before a meal with the idea it might fill you up so you might not eat so much of the main meal.. I once even heard that salads should actually be eaten AFTER a meal instead of before as an appetizer the way most of us do

I don’t often eat fruit at the end of a meal. I tend to like fruit more for a snack or a meal itself. My daughter has fruit every morning after her cereal and toast. Up until now it did not occur to me to have fruit on an empty stomach. What the article states is interesting and makes sense...

I rarely eat fruit, whether it is the condition of my body healthy. I normally do after a meal, so that all the substance into my body. When the stomach is empty, no activity carried on in there. And, if you eat fruits in empty state so for me it causes hunger.

I usually eat fruit as a snack or as part of my lunch. Occasionally I will have some fruit after dinner as a dessert. But I know it is a good idea to eat some fruit before dinner, in fact I have heard that eating apples before meals can help you to eat less and to lose weight because the fiber in the apple fills up your stomach. I am just not in the habit of eating it first but it is a good idea to do so.

Hi, zandi.
I have read these articles before and all said it's better to eat the fruits before the meal. Eating the fruits after meal might upset the stomach and produce gas.
However, there are some fruits that should not be eaten on empty stomach or before meal. For example, we should eat the orange after meal.
As i am not the nutritionist, i believe what the expert said on this matter.
Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

I don't think fruits should be eaten with an empty stomach since they contain acid an may harm our stomach.. I also eat fruits after meals- since it's a dessert. But I'm not so sure now- since doctors said that it's not right- but either of us could be wrong..

Yeah I heard it from my mother. It helps in the digestion she said. Well, it really helps to lessen other food intakes. I take in lots of rice since it's the main meal component of the Filipinos. It's a lot of carbo and I think eating fruits help in digesting it much.
