How do you motivate yourself to clean?

I hate cleaning. I find it depressing. I clean for other people, so it's like more of what I just left. It's never-ending. As soon as you clean off the TV set, the heater comes on, and it's dirty again. I cleaned off a table and my husband was disgusted with the bathroom so he "cleaned it" out onto the table I had just cleaned. After telling him what I thought of his version of cleaning, he didn't get the picture. So I got garbage bags and cleaned my car onto the porch. Then he complained about that. I don't think he "gets it" yet. I had another spot cleaned and a cat kept throwing up on it. I cleaned up the spot and started putting the cat outdoors when he started to throw up.
So how do you motivate yourself to clean? How do you deal with saboturs?

I motivate myself by turning on the radio with some happy upbeat music. Lol, then I dance around while I'm cleaning to the beat. If nothing else, it's good exercize while I'm cleaning. For your cat: take a little dab of vasoline petroleum jelly and put it on his paw at night. (No, a dab doesn't hurt them) That makes the fur-balls pass through the intestines and pass out through their poop instead of getting hacked out. (Hint from my vet, and it works good for me!) And, for the tv collecting dust right after cleaning it: once you cleaned your tv, take a fabric softener sheet (used one is better and softer) and wipe it over the screen and the tv itself (top, sides, etc.) My tv used to be like a magnet attracting dust like that, and this hint helps me a lot. I know what you mean about 'sabateurs', seems like there's one in every family haha.

Wow JoyfulOne, now who has great ideas...And we'd make a great clean up crew, crank that music up and lets get to work..
I heard about the fabric softener sheet, I have a whole list of what those are good for. But I'll have to tell my daughter about the vasoline on the cats paw. Is it just one paw you put this dab on?

Those ideas seem like they might help. I like dancing. During commercials, I can probably clean.
I've never had a long-haired cat (I always adopt short-haired ones, so that might work, this cat adopted me).
Fabric softener sheet really works to keep it from getting dusty right after again? Wow! Never heard that and that could help where I work, too.
Thanks, these are great ideas.
You helped with everything except my hubbie. Still have to work on the sabateur. Thanks, great ideas.

Carmelanirel, you just take a small dab of it and put it onto their paw. Just one paw is enough. Cats are so fastidious about licking themselves clean that they lick it off right away (before it gets on anything else lol). I have wall-to-wall light salmon colored carpeting in most of the house, and light powder blue in the bedrooms. I can't tell you how much I hated cleaning up 'cat-yak' and having to constantly wash off spots! This works good for me with my cats!
Writersedge, yes, I do the fabric softener sheet on my tv all the time, as well as on my computer screens when I clean them. Something about electronics make it like a static magnet lol. I clean them weekly, so mine's pretty much free of that dust that keeps coming on right after I clean. I have an empty kleenex box cube in my laundry, and I keep a few used softener sheets in there just for doing this; this way they stay clean and aren't floating around begging to be tossed haha.

I motivate myself to clean by thinking in long terms. If i leave the dishes til the next day then i'll be waking up with it undone. If leave the furnitures dusted then it'll just accumulate more dust. But if i clean it now then i'd wake up and everything will be clean.

I clean it now, the furnace comes on, it's dusty again. It's never clean. Right after I clean, it's dirty again. That's why there is spring cleaning, I think, so after the furnace quits running, you can actually have something stay clean.
I wash dishes, my husband will have a bowl of cereal at 7 or 8 pm and there will be dishes when I get up in the morning. Nice try, that doesn't do it for me.

Then don't clean at all if you don't want to. I'm not forcing you to clean.

I don't think the majority of men really know how to clean things properly. If I ever have a son he will be learning all that boring stuff right along with the more 'manly' things, lol. One thing that really motivates me to clean is being in a dirty house. For example, if we're at someone else's house and the bathroom is really grimy then it inspires me to scrub ours from top to bottom. It always makes me wonder if maybe ours is just as grubby but I don't notice it because it's our grub.

So I should go to a dirtier house than mine and then I'll want to clean. There's a theory, ha, ha.
My husband was in the military. I would think he would know how to clean as a 20 year career Air Force guy. But one would have to wonder.

Messy things are my weaknesses. Its either I clean them at once or if I got lazy, I leave them for awhile then come back afterwards to finish it up. I have this mentality that : "I still have unfinished business to do" and it keeps bothering me a lot. So I have no choice, whether I like it or not, nobody's gonna do it but myself or else my place will house tons of different kind of insects. I think that's what motivates me more and also the accompaniment of music while working makes me to work fun and lively instead of stressing myself. :)

Music seems to be a common theme here. If it wasn't for music, I don't think much cleaning would be done in this world. Thanks and take care.

Step 1 - I start to get bored, and dont know what to do.
Step 2 - I set on some loud music, and begin cleaning.
When i here music it feels like time's going a lot faster, so next time i have to clean, i dont feel like it is hard to get started.

Music does seem the way to go to motivate a person. Now if I could just get my cats and husband to quit undermining what I do. Thanks and take care.

If you figure this one out, please send me the formula. My hubby thinks every flat surface is a place to put stuff. I am fortunate, in that my son is now living with us, due to a marriage break up. He was not able to clean out the house, which they lost, when he was supposed to, so this week he has been doing that. He has an organized mind, although not an absolute neat nick. He is also big enough to move some difficult things for me. One reason I had to quit work was because I was the only one here really motivated to clean and that not as much as I should have been. We own hundreds or thousands of books, and my husband owns an owners manual for every vehicle he has ever owned. I could keep on griping, but he is a sweety, just clueless about cleaning.

I throw in some music and clean away..Music motivates me a lot and unless I have to read or talk to someone, music is the way..In fact, cranking up the tunes while spring cleaning makes it fun..:)

The key to cleaning is tidiness. Even for doing a small and simple job, you will need to apply your brain power. IF you hate cleaning, hire a maid who is a hygienic person. That will make her clean every single spot.
And as for your question. I am very lazy in cleaning, i come home just throw my clothes anywhere i my room. But it still gets cleaned, but not by me.
The only time i would clean is when my girlfriend visits the house. She's a very hygienic person

Yeah, well, I was very happy when I cleaned off that table, but then he turned around and burried it with junk from the bathroom. So that only works so far. I don't find cleaning relaxing. I have allergies, so I find it sickening. Not to mention a day of cleaning someone else's home and then come home and clean mine. This works for you, but I still need motivation plus what to do with my saboteurs.
