That is so true! I lived at home until I was 24 years old. Living with my parents was not a good place to learn open mindedness! Both parents were old school. My father is a racist,a bigot and extremmely opinionated! If I would of lived at home any longer I would of ended up closed minded! I have been on my own almost 24 years and I have learned so much! One is to be open minded! Especially with religion, politics, different cultures, different people of color and race and gender. I still keep an open mind and I hope I always do! If you close your mind you aren't living.

I believe everyone should live their life the way they want. I do think that having an open mind is better than having a closed mind but to say if one's mind is closed , they aren't living is too harsh. It is all a matter of choice. Some Choice to be narrow. I respect their choice.I think you would have been the same open minded person you are if you stayed with the folks but there would be more arguments.

Some children can live at home as adults and have open minds. That would not happened. I have to leave the farm and get out in the world! If I had not whn I did I would be still living at home and taking care of my dad! Glad my life didn't turn out that way!

Hi Blue, I have to agree with your final statement here. Being open minded is a wonderful thing. It allows you to explore avenues of interest in all manner of subjects. i think the main thing that comes along with an open mind is tolerance. If people like your father are not tolerant of other people and their beliefs/views or ideas then how will they ever understand.

What is so ironic is it is because of my parents that I am open minded. But then when I started to get older I found out they were hypocrites. They were open minded as long as it didn't involve their immediate family. I went on one date with a guy that was African-American. Then all of a sudden it was well what if you two were to have children, it would be so hard on them not being accepted, blah blah blah. I mean it was one date (because of that reaction only) it wasn't even like the guy and I were intimately involved. So, it was kind of weird and disappointing to find that out about my parents, but at least I am not that way.

My parents were hypocrites in some ways too! They couldn't except my brother marring a catholic( were are lutheran)! They could not except their daughter going to catholic school! My dad hates anyone who isn't Lutheran or German the way he acts! He doesn't have an open mind and it is sad! If he did he would discover alot of the world he doesn't realize exsist! i am not like my parents and I am extremely thankful for that!
