I am starting to get more into smoothies but to get the consistency right I follow already existing recipes. Most of them have banana as an ingredient. I like to eat bananas but I do not like them in other foods. Is there a reason why most smoothie recipes have banana added and if so, is there a substitute I can use?

Banana is a popular fruit used in smoothie because it is basically a paste and will easily give a puree effect. I think another fruit who has the same performance of banana to create a smoothie is Avocado, so try using avocado when preparing a smoothie instead of banana.

I completely agree with you! I love to eat bananas on their own but i don't like to eat them in smoothies. It just grosses me out way too much. What i like to do is have a nice raspberry and lemon smoothie. i use frozen raspberries, about 5 ice cubes, a couple big spoons of raspberry yogurt, and about half a cup of real lemon lemonade. the sweet raspberry and the tart lemon go together soooo beautifully!

I think you can put any thing in a smoothie that you want. I make mine with some greek yogurt and almond milk because I don't like them real thick. I don't believe that there is any hard or fast rules as to what goes into smoothies. Just make it to your taste. Thats what I do.

I have smoothies pretty much every day and have been doing this for the last few years. The ingredients vary constantly but the one thing that my smoothies always have in them is bananas. We buy bananas by the box on a weekly basis in our house and if we get too many going ripe at once, then we freeze them and move onto the next box if they are ripe. When we get lots of frozen ones, then we might go a week without buying a box. If we do not have any bananas at all which happens rarely, then I mostly do not have a smoothie on that day. I love bananas and prefer to have smoothies with them as a base. I have had non banana smoothies before a few times and on those occasions I have used Chia Seeds or Cashews to thicken them up a bit. My smoothies are always raw vegan smoothies, so no dairy products at all. This website below has an ebook with a lot of raw vegan smoothie recipes that might help you in your bananaless smoothie search. http://tinyurl.com/lovesmoothies

Strawberry or mango can be used to make smoothies which will taste good. Manga pulp can be used with milk and sugar or honey and mixed in a mixer to get a thick smoothie.try it out.
