McCain: "I Never Considered Myself a Maverick..."

Say WTF...lol? How many times during the 2008 campaign did Senator John McCain refer to himself as exactly that - a MAVERICK? Heck, his former running mate, Sarah Palin, called him a maverick FOUR times when she recently campaigned with him in Arizona! That's four times in fifteen minutes that she urged the Arizona voters to send McCain the Maverick back to the U.S. Senate! However, even though he stood right beside Sarah as she said those words, he told Newsweek recently that, "I never considered myself a maverick. I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities." What's going on here? Is he now simply being mavericky about being a maverick...lol? Is he really that forgetful? Or is he trying to get away with a big fat lie and thinking the voters of Arizona will be too stupid to notice... Annie

I think McCain finally figured out that he was in trouble and may soon return to private life. He is scrambling now and trying to woo back his supporters. The Republican party is split right now and having a hard time trying to find candidates that can win. Some are even lining up with support for Ron Paul and that would be their de@th warrant.. Their main purpose now is trying to destroy the Obama administration, they care little about helping the middle class or poor in this country. They only care about "power" and lining the pockets of the wealthy.

"The Republican party is split right now and having a hard time trying to find candidates that can win." Actually at this point it's hard to find republicans that would lose. The fact is republicans are trying to find the BEST candidates. No major democrat is even in the race for McCain's seat. Even an entrenched Democrat like Harry Reid is down in the polls to all THREE potential republicans that could face him. I know you're desperate to believe democrats can't lose, but this is going to be a bad year for them. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_senate_elections/nevada/election_2010_nevada_senate

It's McCain, what do you expect? I think it is time for him to hang it up, he is getting much worse with age. But, that is up to the people of Arizona to decide, and I don't live in Arizona.

Holy cow patties! What does it gain him to drop the maverick label? Does he say I was just kidding all these years? Does he say I was really a mealy mouthed wimp shilling for the highest bidder all these years?

I think it's possible that he's both a lying liar AND a mealy mouthed wimp shilling for the highest bidder all these years! I've never been a big fan either but I once did have a great deal of respect for him. Annie

I heard that the other day and was going to post it as well. I really don't know what he was smoking when he said that. I mean, who in this country didn't hear the word "Maverick" from him a million times during the 2008 election?

Thank you, Taskr! I'm surprised that so many here don't seem to recall him ever using it. Annie

It's also one that politifact posted on, although I thought it was hardly necessary to do any research. http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/apr/06/john-mccain/mccains-ultimate-maverick-move-denial/

I read about this, and just shook my head but no it doesn't really surprise me much. The Maverick thing was stupid and cheesy to begin with, I always cringed whenever I heard it, but now it is just waaaaaaay too late to refute it, the idea of taking it back now just makes it worse and yes just makes him appear senile, desperate, or just trying to talk up towards a new game/persona. No matter what, this does not make him look any better in my eyes.

I think he's mavericky being a maverick by denying that he's the maverick that he really is.... Wait a minute, I'm starting to sound like Palin. Apparently, McCain will say whatever suits him at the moment...and that's pretty disappointing.

I think Sarah from the frozen north pretty much usurped the term "maverick" and made it her own. No wonder McCain isn't commfortable with it anymore. Judging from the expressions on his and Cindy's faces when Sarah Palin campaigned for him recently, they are not to comfortable with her period. Funny thing, I used to like the term "maverick". It was a neat expression back when "Maverick was a legend of the West" Rember that. Those were the days. lol

I came across videos where others called him a maverick and one where he said "I've been called a maverick." No where did I find one where he said "I am a maverick."

Here's a montage of videos: http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/04/maverick-john-mccain-and-his-forsaken-nickname.php He even called himself a maverick in the subtitle of one of his own books, "Worth the Fighting For: The Education of an American Maverick, and the Heroes Who Inspired Him." Did McCain refer to himself as a maverick, or did he just admit that others had put that tag on him? I don't know. Was it, "I'm called a maverick," or was it, "I am a maverick?" I don't know the answer to that either. Why do you get so keyed up over nothing? If you're not careful, your head might come to a point.

John McCain always says and does whatever he thinks works for John McCain at the moment. Frankly, after the way he treated Sarah Palin, I'm surprised she will campaign for him at all. I voted for her, not him, and would never vote for him. He sways whichever way the wind blows.

anniepa, I agree with your assessment re "mavericking" and McCain. Too bad he wimped out and threw the election. I acknowledge your insight re this matter, but I question your inability to discern "a big fat lie" and a tall, skinny liar whose arrogant behind should not even be allowed to sit in a chair in the White House. Anyone who lies is wrong. But, how in the name of heaven can you not see the biggest hoax (LIE) ever perpetrated on the American public? .....the "biggest, fattest lie EVER in the history of America"? If McCain and Palin become media darlings and sell out to a popularity contest, it comes back on them. But what traitor, "Son of Kenya" (Quoting Kenyan ministers, parliament, newspapers, NPR, and a host of others) has done in violating our Constitution, (the crime of which is TREASON) and lying about EVERYTHING while using his thugs as enforcers, comes back to US, the Americans who are losing EVERYTHING, from homes to jobs, freedom, our whole economy and way of life, even life itself because so many fools followed Oprah Winfrey and other morons down the garden path to an insidious end. It can only end in "tears and gnashing of teeth" unless the usurper is removed. WTF...OMG...WHATEVER!

And so, Annie, again and again, to infinity, the monster usurper IS NOT OUR PRESIDENT. He can NEVER LEGALLY OR CONSTITUTIONALLY be "president" in this country. He is a self-confessed dual-national which DISQUALIFIES HIM as NATURAL-BORN, PERIOD, NO MATTER WHERE HE WAS BORN. But, it was Kenya, anyway, according to the Kenyan Ministers, Parliament, and so many others; see my discussion LOTS MORE EVIDENCE. It just shows what a liar he is. Why should I or ANYONE believe a man who keeps vital records about his birth, school attendence, citizenship at taxpayer expense of 2million dollars EVER believe he is our president? You must enjoy being made a fool of. I respect the office of President too much to dishonor it by allowing an imposter WHO HAS NO RESPECT FOR THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT, OUR CONSTITUTION, OUR COUNTRY AND WE THE PEOPLE to allow this imposter/liar/deceiver to sully it. His arrogant behind should not even be allowed to sit in a chair in the WH. What I can never accept is LIARS and DECEIVERS; why should anyone, except to their own detriment.

Has John McCain ever called himself a maverick? I know others have called him that, but I don't know if he has.
