I was looking in my list of mp3s when I saw the song Photographs and Memories by Jim Croce. For me, this is the saddest song I've heard in my life. The lyrics just say it all -- the guy is just reminiscing good times with his partner through the photographs, saying that he loved her then and that the photos are the only ones left of their good memories. The lyrics just pierce my heart every time I play that song.
How about you, what can you say is the saddest song for you?

I never thought of that one as a sad song, but it could be, very. For me the two saddest ones are "The Way We Were" and "I'm Gonna Love You Forever". The first one's obvious, but the second one is because somebody who said that to me didn't...

Oh, now that's sad... when someone says that or dedicates a song to you but it doesn't end up in a good way. Because it reminds you of a certain person that has gone from your life, it is a sad song.

It's got to be a toss up as to what the Saddest Song is that I have ever heard. First has to be Seasons in the Sun. Lyric originally by Terry Jacks.
The song reminisces about fun times friends had before the passing of one.
The Lyrics may be read here:

This song just makes me think.
Secondly would have to be Amazing Grace. I'm not sure if the artist who wrote the original lyrics is John Newton or not.
The Lyrics may be read here:

This song was played at my friends memorial.

I agree with you. Amazing grace was played in my brothers memorial too. This song is one of the saddest songs i have ever heard. I just hope this song is never played, it may bring back the tearful moment spent at my brothers memorial.

Prayer for Time is a song so sad too. It tells about the truth of the world we have today. It puts life through melody how people fight over fellow people to get on top. How insensitive we are to the needs of other people. There are a lot of selfish people who dominate the world by power and influence leaving those who are helpless crawling even in getting something to eat. It's just sad. Very sad. But the song on a positive note calls for us all to pray.

Is this the one sung by Carrie Underwood? Yeah, it's a sad song as well. It shows what's happening in our world today and how bad it has become.

i agree with Photographs and Memories, i also like stolen from Dashboard Confessional and songs by Secondhand Serenade. there's a lot of sad songs that i was able to relate to at one point. funny thing is, music has a way of affecting us when we are most vulnerable, at least from my observation

That's so true. I remember when I broke up with my first boyfriend, all the sappy songs were dedicated to him. Hahaha!

I guess it's also because of the lyrics that makes it a sad song.

If I were a boy then the song would be from James Blunt - You're Beautiful. What if you are the girl? A very nice song isn't it, but also sad in another way.

Yeah I agree with the other poster. 25 minutes is kinda sad. Also, Don't cry Joni, hehe... Joni was a 15 year old girl who was longing for Jimmy's love and asked him to wait for her. Jimmy rejected her for she was young. When he finally decided he wanted her, it was too late because Joni already married Jimmy's best friend named John.

Con il tuo nome, no words for grief in English, is the saddest song I've ever heard. I don't know a word of Italian at all, but this song expresses itself through sorrowful melody and Ivana Spagna's heart-wrenching vocals. Besides, the lyrics tell a sad story. It's so sad that every time I hear it, I can feel so much pain in my heart. It really hurts...

it is one of the saddest song i have ever heard. and BREAKEVEN by SCRIPT is yet another saddest song i've ever heard.
"... what am i supposed to do when the best part of me was always you
what am i supposed to say when i'm all chocked up that you are okay
i'm falling to pieces.. yeah i'm falling to pieces"
a part of the lyrics which almost brought tears to my eyes

When it comes too sad songs, the first thing that pops out of my mind was Cat Stevens 'Father and Son'. Aside from its sad melody, the song also frames about a father not understanding his son's desire of breaking away and a son who had a hard time explaining his father that its the best time for him to have a life of his own.

I think the saddest song for me is 25 MINUTES by Michael Learns To Rock. Can you imagine that. This guy finally realizes that he wants to marry this girl that he loves. Thus he looks for her. Only to find her, right after her wedding. THat's not all, the girl said he's 25 minutes too late. Meaning, the girl was waiting for her all along, it's just that, it came to a point things were just too late. She moved on and got married.
I always imagine a scene that is something like that and I am greatly saddened.
