I found this article totally disgusting. Don't call this paranoia but I do believe that things are overboard. What are they going to accuse him next? That he is a paedophile? This article is totally disgusting, shame for the author/journalist who wrote it.
Plans to have the Pope arrested when he visits the UK will succeed because he is not a head of state, a solicitor has said.
Atheist authors Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens proposed the action against the Pontiff for his handling of child abuse scandals in the Catholic church.
The writers' solicitor Mark Stephens said applications will be made to courts in the UK and the International Criminal Court for a warrant for Pope Benedict XVI's arrest.
His likely defence would be be that he is immune from prosecution during his visit to Britain in September, according to the lawyer.

Sorry if this offends you but the pope deserves to be arrested. No holy or divine figure that a whole entire religion is following should allowing any kind of child abuse. I'm tired of hearing about all these priests and other religious figures taking advantage of children. In my eyes their couldn't be much of a worse sin then that.
Arresting the pope wouldn't be going against the Catholic religion it would be going against the man. I hope that Catholic's can realize this and not defend this man blindly due to their faith. A key part of religion is purifying ourselves of evil and impurities and I would have to say that popes and priests that abuse children are fairly impure.

You are not offending me but for what? On what grounds are you going to arrest this Pope? Are you being carried away by the media frenzy as well? What crime has he commit?

For allowing priests of his church and religion to abuse children and get away with it. If any kind of suspicion is followed up with evidence then those priests need to be out of there because abusing and corrupting the innocence of children is far from holy.

Hi Jambi462. Most of the crimes committed happened 20, thirty years ago when he was not even a Pope. So how can you blame someone if he is not liable for it?

Rome, The Vatican is its own country. I would think he would have diplomatic immunity.
I've heard this Pope is German. Do you think that part of the problem is that every time a really powerful German Leader came to power, in recent history, we had a world war, both I and II? So if he is German, do you think that they are trying to get rid of him because of his nationality?

It's just a theory and I'm just asking if people believe it to be possible.

Maybe being German and his character does not make him popular with the people and the media. He has a lot of burden to carry on his shoulder. He does have the charisma of his predecessor the Polish Pope John Paul2. That's why the media is finding him an easy target.

This is ridiculous, why would any legal and transparent system punish someone for the crimes that he hasn't committed? I trust, it is another stupid attempt by some self-important fools to gain publicity (maybe money too). I don't think any court of magistrate will approve their application... So let them be, at what they're doing!!! ;)

I do agree with your mrpearl. I do believe that they aimed to gain publicity and it seems that they are getting it

If it is the case that the pope attempted to hide a case of paedophilia when he was a cardinal then surely he should face the tribunal of the law the same as anyone else would. He should certainly not be above the law.

Hi Urban, I guess you have never listened to the Pope speaking about Pedophilia....

I heard a Catholic Cardinal saying that the current Church's policy is to denounce pedophile priests to the local authorities. So I guess adopting a more transparent policy, the church cannot do more than this.

It could do a lot more than this, it could admit it was wrong and apologise for not doing this in the past

lol =D What's there to be disgusted about?? If the pope is not guilty of anything, so just let it be.. ALl the more, the pope should just visit UK to prove his innocence.. haha =D
After all, he's such a well known figure worldwide, and thus all the more, he should stand up for things he's being wrongly accused of?? haha

My first reaction when I read about this was. “What???” The idea is to resolve these issues somehow and what would arresting the Pope achieve? It is a ridiculous idea and very unjust. The Pope himself is not responsible for the actions of some sick individuals who happened to represent the Church at the time. ..

The news serves as a publicity stunt for the two people concerned
I do agree with you that the Pope is no responsible for the crimes committed in the past.

Hi ronald, In my opinion, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens just want to destroy all religion without proposing something to take it's place and that I could never agree with. There are very few true atheists in the world and why would one want to be an atheist anyway? The idea of having the Pontiff arrested is ridiculous and they are clearly just out to get attention and in this case I'm certain that they would get more then they expect. I'm sure they must know that there isn't a chance that this will happen. I think that the church may be moving a bit too slow, not only with this issue but with some changes that I feel must eventually come about anyway. In my opinion all denominations in Christianity, with the possible exception of Unity, are at least several generations behind the times. I feel that the same can be said for other world religions. People in general are so much better educated today than they were a hundred years ago and much more likely to demand change. Blessings.

That is definitely not the way to deal with the pervert priests in the Catholic church. I think it is proposed as a sensational way to call attention to the scandal.
All of this could possibly be solved by requiring that no priest be alone with a child for any reason but that would involve parent chaperons and since the older generation is brainwashed to deify priests, you'd have to hire people from outside the church.
I think the Pope, if stories I've read are true, is guilty of protecting pervert priests. But publishing such a story about arresting him is not helping anything.

Hi Dragon54u, the latest reports reassure me as a Catholic that the Church is doing its utmost to stop this abuse once and for all. I have heard a cardinal on the news today saying that pedophiles should be defrocked and reported to the local authorities. The Church cannot assume a more transparent approach than this. I read that background checks are being done about employers working with children in institutes, schools etc.

hi ronaldinu why would they arrest him because some of the priests were p aedophiles, thats not his fault ,thats the fault of whoever was the head of the churches where the molestations occurred. I would agree that the Pope is immune from prosecution. This really does not ring true to
me.

Hi Hatley, I think that the media is over exaggerating, and over inflating things. I am sick of reading and hearing news about pedophila and the Catholic church.

I want to be careful about what I say here and I don't know the facts but I did hear accusations that the pope was aware of a certain priest that was carrying out child abuse and yet he did nothing! Whether this is true or not I don't know but this is what was mentioned and it sounds as though the church was trying to cover things up in order to prevent scandal. I just think that it's a real shame that the church has been tarnished by the scum that are these pedeaophile priests! Sorry to use such harsh words but that's what these priests are that have perpetrated these acts, pure scum! I was a practising Catholic once upon a time but I just don't think the church has any credibility anymore, it's a failed institution. To all the innocent priests who are carrying out their office, I feel sorry for them. Andrew

it's a failed institution.
Hi Andrew. I disagree with you on this one. If you stretch this argument you can stretch it that even Jesus was a failure. One of his chosen apostles, decided to betray him and turn him to his enemies. The more that the Church is attacked and is at its lowest, the more the grace of God works in it. The church is made up of human people like me and you who are liable to make mistakes, do evil things. The church is not made up of pedophile priests only. there are lots of holy people who have dedicated their whole life for others.

These two idiots aren't going to get anywhere in their demonic plan to arrest the Pope. It's disgusting...it's repulsive...and I continue to be infuriated by those who seek nothing less than Pope Benedict's downfall. It's satanic, it really is. The Church will survive this, though.

Hawkins and Hitchens are what I call "fundie atheists" who are using this to self-publicize their agenda - to stop anyone have any kind of faith and to destroy the catholic church in particular.
They'd better be planning to use their own money for the lawyers and such, I don't see why anyone else should pay for it.
