Are daytime dramas becoming extinct?

First The Guiding Light was cancelled and now As The World Turns will be coming to an end in September? My first thought was "What are they putting in their place? More talk shows? More court tv shows?" They have no plans to start up any new daytime drama serials it seems, so does this mean eventually they will all go off the air? There was Another Word, which was on for a long time, and Ryan's Hope, Passions... are soaps going to be a thing of the past? What do you think?

It may seem like they're disappearing, but I think they'll come back in some form or another. Not everybody likes game shows or talk shows, so they'll have to come up with something similar to soaps, but more palatable for younger audiences, I think. There's always the Soap Opera channel, lol! I've never cared for soap operas, but I had an aunt who was absolutely hooked on them. I remember I made the mistake of going over to her house to get something for my Mom, and she met me at the door, informing me bluntly that her 'stories' were on, come back later, lol!

I think soaps are slowly but surely becoming a thing of the past. They are not getting the viewers that they used to have. I honestly seldom watch them anymore. Some storylines got so ridiculous, that it made me angry. If they could come up with more quality writing, I think they could yet survive. I too, am tired of talk shows. I used to love Another World, but it was one of the first to get cancelled. I watched General Hospital for years, but now I do not even know most of the characters if I happen to see it. Days of Our Lives lost me when Marlena was possessed by the devil. It was just too irritating to watch.

My husband (boyfriend then) got me hooked on soaps. He worked shift work and watched soaps in the afternoon on his week days off. The show then was Another World. When Another World got cancelled I followed my favourite Jake McKinnon over to As The World Turns. He has long since gone from daytime dramas, but I'm still watching ATWT. I will actually be relieved when it is off the air and then I won't have that connection anymore.

I guess I'm one of the few that hate all of the above... Never got into soaps, and hate the talk shows and judge shows - and I've been ON one of those!

It looks like All My Children is in a good place and will be around for awhile or else they would not have gone to the expense and trouble of moving the production of the show from NYC to LA. Even though the writing on Y&R has been pretty bad for several years, it does not seem to be in any imminent danger. I don't what will replace As The World Turns but GL was, in effect, replaced with a game show, Let's Make A Deal. In my opinion there are too many talk shows and too many fake reality shows at night for that matter.

Moving from NY to LA could be the beginning of the end. *shrug*

I have wondered about that too. These soaps are getting in theri 40-50's and like everything else.. maybe their times have come. However, I still think those that are left will have a few more years to go. I think there are just favorites and those that stopped being the favorite are the ones that have been cancelled. Could have been cause the writters just got worn out with writting the stories...they do all seem to be getting to be nothing be repeats of previous storylines...only the names have been changed!

I think they are becoming extinct unfortunately. And I think the plans are to fill the time slots with game shows...apparently they are cheaper to make? I read that As the World Turns is going to be replace with either a remake of Pyramid or Password.

Could be but I find it hard to believe. They have tried both those shows a couple of times with different hosts and they haven't cut it. The only show that has stood the test of time with half a dozen different hosts is Wheel of Fortune. Family Feud has had several different hosts but it keeps getting bounced around and I'm not sure they are even making new shows. If they are going the game show route they are now calling them reality shows.

Actually, they are not. I am still a teenager - 19 and every single day there is something new bothering me - people or consequences. Every day is quite a day and I love it and hate it at the same time, because I don't want to lose interest in my life and sit all day and do nothing. Dramatic for me means interesting, but sometimes it can be too dramatic even horrific and I don't want that. Have a nice myLotting

I think the only way for the soap shows to servive is they need to be more real, since in todays society it is all about reality shows. I honestly quit watching daytime dramas after repeately watching charectors whom had been killed off were miraculously brought back to life again. Now I totally agree that the networks need to come up with some plan to improve programs throughout the day. The networks need to take into consideration for the people that are home during the day.
