From my point of view, I have the idea that technology can be used also as a blessing or a curse. Whether or not it can benefit the whole world greatly depends on the users' intentions, methods and precautions. However, it is all beyond our consideration that what kind of a person the user is, how they control their own conception of selfish, etc. Due to the varibility of most factors, there are sometimes davastating catastrophes which happend without any prediction, such as the Three Mile Island and the Chanllenger disaster. Thus, in recent years people have become increasingly aware that the problems of human life cannot always be solved by technological means.
As Charles Perrow writes,'Human-made catastrophes appear to have increased with industrialization as we built devices that could crash, sink, burn, or explore.' Take the medical technology as an example. The objectives of medical thchnology is to extend and improve human's life, alleviating pain, injury and handicap. However, in real operating process, we are gradually aware that many vital ethical issues must be addressed, even that we cannot just give a one-way judgement according to this technological mean's direct function. Other technologies, such as nuclear power and chemical plants, can sometimes directly threaten human life.
As the rising of the critical problems, many intelligent observers seek to overcome these enormous risks, which are associated with complex technologies, in order to call for a more thorough assessment of the potential impact of new technologies before they are put into operation. With the enlargement of knowledge and the increase depth of the thoughts, some provident scientists have realized that perhaps no one single factor can lead to the horrific catastrophe. According to Perrow, it is important to study technological system as a whole rather than focus on or overemphersize individual components of those systems. Well, I totally agree with his statement.
That's all above what I want to say.
