American apathy for the governing of our nation

Do you follow US politics? If not, why? I think most people who do not pay attention feel as my mom does. Why pay attention, my opinion will make no difference anyway. I wonder what percentage of Americans feel this way. I know for me, the most frustrating aspect of following our national policies and governing is not knowing who is telling the truth. Do you trust those who govern our nation? What would it take to make you sit up and take notice.
