Do you have a habit of buying books but never read them?

Do you love to buy books for yourself but actually forget or don't have time to read them? It does happened to me a few times. When going to the shopping mall, I like to hang out at the bookstores just to see what's new on the shelf. But when certain books catch my attention, I'll buy them right away imagining that I could spend my free time reading them. But until now, some of the books still remain untouched. It's not that I don't have time but I just forget or have lost interest on the books. Does it happen to you too? Let's share.

Hey altha! I have been on a "reading binge" since last summer! I have read about 10 books since then! And now I am on a buying book binge and am reading everything that I buy even if I don't really care for the books after I get them! I am determined now to read everything that I buy no matter what! If I waste the money by buying something by mistake then I am going to read it! I love to read and had stopped reading for a long time and got myself back into enjoying reading late at night into the early morning hours to keep myself from staying on the computer! I need to add variety to my brain and it seems to be working because I have now found "reading books" again and I love it!

I've been on a reading (& writing) binge since Mom taught me how to read & write! The sole hiatus, well, really, slowdown, was, ironically, during my 20-year stay working in a rare books & manuscripts library. I was too busy at work to read! It was still far & away my favorite job, ever. I suppose being able to read off work saved my sanity. Maggiepie "IF EVEN HIS wife NOW ADMITS HE'S KENYAN, why IS OBAMA STILL IN OFFICE?"

No, as soon as I buy a book I read it at home. In fact I have read many books in my shelf a few times already. I buy books that I could read only.

I'm like you, I'm such a book addict I can't not read a book I have in my possession. I read so much in fact that I don't buy so many books, the library is much more suitable to me so the only books I buy are the one I know I like and will read ten times at least.

WOW, you guys read your books more than once? That's a huge challenge for a person who seldom touch her own books like me. I should learn to be as enthusiastic as you guys in reading. Now I have stopped buying books and turn to the library instead. Though sometimes I didn't get myself to finish reading the books I borrowed, at least they cost me nothing.

Morrigan: "Book addict!" I know a woman who loves to get kids to learn to love reading. She jokingly refers to it as "catching the 'dreaded' Reading Disease!" Maggiepie HAVE A TOPIC THAT WON'T quiiiite FIT INTO JUST ONE CATEGORY? POST IT IN Open Mike!

LOL...With that load of books, I guess you can open a library :) Good luck with the reading, I'm pushing myself to read all the untouched books too!

Oh, have I ever? The question is yes. It wasn't intentional never to read them of course. But because I like buying books in used bookshops, they tend to pile up a lot. I do go through the pile slowly and eventually get to read them. However, we had a big flood here last year, and I wasn't able to save all my books. Because of that, a lot of the books I had piled up got destroyed and I never got to read them :(

Thanks, I try not to think about it so much. But it has taught me not to buy too many books if I have a lot that I have yet to read :)

Hi verabear, thanks for giving feedback. I also like to buy secondhand books which are a lot more cheaper than the new ones. But I tend to procrastinate on reading them and sometimes forget that they exist! By the way, I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to all your books, that was a big lost! I wish you good luck in starting over your book collections and never give up reading!

No , as far as I am concerned, I think I seldom buy the books without reading. For me, when I buy a book at home, then I will try my best to make full use of my spare time to read it over. I just do not want to delay the things to the next day, which I may have some other things to do. So the first time I hvae bought the book, I think I will try my best to read it over as oon as poosinle. I will let it last a long time .

I buy books only which are very interesting for me and read them with pleasure. One of my biggest book was for computer newbies, before many many years, when I hadn't my own PC and read all 1300 pages with passion and interest. I think, that in nowadays with these technologies we don't spare enough time for books which is sad :(

I laughed a lot reading this, of course it happened to me at some point of my life but hey, I started give it an effort to read as much as I can and with a lot of discipline it payed off. I mean really, start by saying to yourself "today i will read 20 or 30 pages" and you will see that if you stick to this you are slowly going to read more and more. If you are so incline, that is. Also, maybe you should practice self-restraint in the mall and instead of buying a book, you lay off of it and come back in a week and see if you still want it. You seem very impulsive to me and I think you should invest your time in self-control and discipline..

Thank you for the feedback, and yeah, I always thought of myself as being impulsive when it comes to buying things. I agree with you on practicing self-restraint and discipline and I'm gonna do that. Thanks a lot buddy!

I've bought many books which I haven't gotten around to reading just yet, I still don't think it's a waste of money or anything because they're there as and when I need them which in my opinion is a good thing. I actually read comic books/novels more than I read text books, as I find them more interesting and I like to see pictures as it tells more to me. It's not that I don't want to read them, just haven't got around to it.

Nope. It's exactly backward for me; I have a friend who buys literally large paper grocery bagfuls of books all in one trip, & freely shares them with me, as she knows my budget can seldom afford me that lux--well, wait, not a "luxury," as I nearly said. With we bibliophiles, it's more a necessity! Before I became so poor, I used to do the same as she, & as a young girl, I haunted the city library, & dragged home the maximum allowed. I have a cousin who, as a child, did that, too, & he'd read them all quickly & return for more. The librarian in our small town assumed he couldn't have actually read so many, & grew annoyed, then complained to his mom. My aunt & I set her straight pronto! John & I will probably have several books (in different rooms) going the day we kick our respective buckets! Maggiepie "IF EVEN HIS wife NOW ADMITS HE'S KENYAN, why IS OBAMA STILL IN OFFICE?"

I have a bad habit of doing that, too. I'm trying to read all my books now... decide which ones I will keep and which ones I will try to sell online. It's going to take me a while. I don't have enough free time to read them all. :)

Haha...yeah it happens to me when I buy books or DVDs. usually I don't have time to read since my work required me to work 9 to 5 and when I went home, all I want is just relaxing. For some people, reading books are a way of relaxing. I used to feel like that back in college or when I was at school, but nowadays only intenet and movies that relaxed my mind.

I do tend to buy a lot of books for myself because of the fact that I have always been a reader. That said, there are very few times that I will buy a book and never read it. I actually keep a stack of books that I've never read before and when I finish with that stack of books, I will reread books that I've already read before. I couldn't imagine wasting a lot of my money on books that I never intend to read.

That does happen to me on many occasions where i buy a book, but just dont get the time to read it. But eventually, i do manage to read it only after 2 to 3 months of buying it.

It happens quite often to me to buy books but never to read them. The reasons are:lack of time and forgot about them. I usually buy books because I find them interesting and useful to be read sometime in the future and I don't want to loose the chance of getting them. As my spare time is short, I happened to read my books while traveling by train or while in hospital.

I have tons of books... about 200 that I have yet to read. Some came in a load from my mother several years ago; some came in another load from my parents' house after my father passed away. And then there are those that I have bought either from the library, garage sales, second hand stores or new (book stores or online). I don't have time to read them all and doubt I ever will. I keep looking over at the shelf trying to decide what book to read next. In the meantime someone will loan me a book to read and I feel I have a priority to read it first so I can return the book. So many books, so many decisions, so little time.

I sure do have a habit of buying books and don't get around to reading them just yet, but it adds to my collection. I buy books that I know that I will enjoy reading so when I have spare time then I can just grab one and read it that's already in my collection. I don't lose interest in them at all, I just make sure I have my favorite books when I want to read.

I too have loads of books I've never read. I do intend to read them one day when I have time. But time is something I don't have the leisure of enjoying.
