Do you read only the main question or the entire post?

Sometimes i end up responding to a discussion only by reading the main heading of the question. I DON'T GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE POST. Once i was responding to a discussion like that and suddenly thought of reading the entire post. It was then that i realized that there is so much information in the post. I think reading the entire post is important.

It is extremely important to read the whole post and see what the topic is about before responding. Many lotters post discussions with great eye-catching titles and often they lead us to believe that the topic is about something else. I have done this and even though the title seems to mean one thing, it is often our minds that lead us in the wrong direction and we think about something which is far away from the topic of the discussion. I have often received responses which have nothing to do with my topic and it is blatantly obvious that the user was in a hurry to post and had not read anything at all. The consequences can sometimes be quite amusing

Hi mysdianait, I totally understand what you are trying to say. These things can be so funny sometimes. Can you relate to us an example of the above mentioned thing. Thanks.

The one that I remember best was a discussions that I started with the title: "I'm not getting any this week-end..." and I was talking about the notifiers not arriving. Many who responded read the whole topic, maybe thinking it was about something else and they had a laugh but one bright spark went on to respond, mistaking me for a male too, that "I don't really have to ever rely on myself anymore since my girlfriend moved in with me" He went on to tell me that "when it is available to you again that it's gonna be great" I was, and it is so obvious had he read the topic, really talking about notifiers but he got his wires crossed somewhere

Reading the entire post does seem to make more sense to me. I like to know exactly what information that the person is looking for or any addtional questions that may be embeded in the post. I often read the response also before making my post.

Not only is reading the entire post, before responding, is important(obviously or how do we know what we are responding to in total?) but is the only way that you can respond with a useful quality answer. If you care to take a moment to read the FAQ on responding to a discussion, you will note that we must also read the responses to a discussion we are interested in responding to before writing our response. IE: http://www.mylot.com/o/faq/faq8.aspx (scroll down) This is to assure to avoid writing a response similar to one that someone else has already written. Take care in using MyLot to therefore keep the information provided by the site of the utmost quality. Simply just reading the title and not the post is lazy but also a disrespect that the poster and the time and care that they took to write the post themselves. Happy MyLotting. Enjoy!

Hi damsel, as a rule, yes I do read all the responses. I scan through them first. If there are more than three pages of responses however, I pass up responding for the most part, unless of course I know my angle is of no other. I can not be bothered to read through four or more pages of responses. I have had discussions with more than three pages of responses as well and makes a real task of commenting on the responses, never mind choosing a BR. So, I tend to try to get in early to be one of the first page responders but it doesn't always work that way so i end up having to read a lot first. It is worth it because I end up getting many other points of view and can actually learn something new, which I love. I tend to have note pad open and after readikng the discussion, I will qickly type out points I want to make, before reading the responses, that way my mind is still clear on what I am thinking when reading the discussion. Whereas after reading the responses, I can get a bit off track. By writing out my own thoughts first, my response stays genuine, individual and hopefully unique. From responses to my discussions alone however, I can tell that not all members do read through all responses first, some do but a lot don't. Eventhough we are required to. Have a Great Week End!

Hi damsel_prerna, I always read the entire post before give my response to any discussion. Sometimes (or most of the time) the title did not give a clear picture about the topic and might be misleading unless we read the whole story behind it. I did receive a few responses that nothing to do with my topics before and I am sure they did not read the entire post that I made. A few of my friends and I always keep the title short and just for the sake of putting the title. Unless you read it all, you would not have an idea what it is all about. Even read a part of it might not give you the correct idea about the discussion. Since I always make an incomplete title, I knew that I need to read the whole stories before I give my response to others discussion.

Hi akuler, I think most of us keep the title incomplete. We cannot obviously put our thought in one line. That it why we have to describe it, for others to understand. Therefore, it is important to read the entire post to get exactly what the starter wants from the responders.

In order to know what the mylotter is really asking cannot be reveal only by reading the headline only..it is necessary to read out all the description of a particular discussion..and after understanding then one should give response on it..I always read the entire post before giving any response to it..

when I started here in mylot, once I have already read the title and already got the thought,I easily gave my point of view about the topic, but later on I found out that we should read first the whole thing before responding to specific discussion so we can provide good answer or good advice to the one who make the discussion. It is also important that you will read other responses so you can also give your point of view on their responses. With this the discussion will be meaningful and informative. It can also develped harmonious relationship with the starter of the discussion.

Hi damsel_prerna. I always read the entire post as you can miss a lot of information. Titles are just that, titles, while the title will grab your attention to a post it may not mean that is what the discussion is about.

We are a little guilty of not reading the entire posts of a discussion. We really should take the time to read through first. Sometimes we could miss the entire point of the discussion because we were in a hurry to move on.

Hi, friend. When I read a discussion, I always read the whole content instead of just taking a glimpse of the title, though some titles do convey the main ideas. But usually, when I read through the entire discussion, I find the creator has something more to say apart from the information stated in the topic. So I may misunderstand his/her meaning by just reading the main question.

It's important to read the entire post and not just the title question. It can get you into trouble if the person who posted was misleading you with the title or the title was only a small part of the question. I read the whole first post and skim though all the responses to see what other people have had to say. You might want to try that before responding to any more discussions. Otherwise you're going to be really annoying to some posters.

As far as I am concerned, I think I usually read all of the post. But sometimes I will just read the main question here, just for I am have little time here in mylot. If the post is really a new area for me, or a very intering one for me, I think no matter how long it will be, I will try my best to read it over. For me, I come here is not just for earn money, I am still try my best to learn here. As we all know that we join here is not only for money, it still be a good place for learning.

I agree some post are really lenghty to explain the problem but if it warrents a answer and they only got a few responses then maybe I will repsond to that question. Thanks and Have a Great night Sincerely Unique16
