some people gain weight because of other medical issues. like me, and some people just eat away their emotions and gain weight that way. when i was 11 years old i had my tonsils taken out, during the operation my surgen burnt my tongue. i had silent strep throat, i had the bacteria and all that but not the symptoms. so when he burnt my tongue an infection spread to my joint causing them to inflame with fluid. and my heart valves got messed up causing leakage into my heart. in april of 2009 my doctor tells me that i will need heart surgery at some point in my life. and im only 21. well being told at 11 years old that if i do too much physical activity that i can have a heart attack, i was taken out of gym class, because the lack of physical activity i gained weight and never had the energy to burn off the weight, so it kept piling on.

OMG! I am so sorry for you with all of those medical problems. My Mother had rheumatic fever as a child and as a result she had scar tissue on her heart valves, causing leakage of blood into the heart. She had numerous heart surgeries, including one to put artificial valves in her heart and another to take out the artificial valves and to replace them with pig valves. The Doctors can do amazing things these days. I have been overweight for most of my life despite the fact that I have been an ardent exerciser for at least 15 years. My problem is definitely emotional issues. I've long since forgiven the people involved but just got a handle on the emotional eating a couple of months ago. I've lost 10 lbs so far and I think that I'm finally ready to diet. Best of luck to you.

I was born that way? No probably not, but as far back as I can remember I have been overweight. I have several reasons why I am now, I am an emotional eater (case in point I gained 20 pounds over the last 2 months because it was the end of the semester and I am a college professor) plus I am not very active. I never played sports in school and I don't enjoy exercising plus I have bad eating habits, that I am trying to fix but it is hard. My whole family is overweight. We gain and lose weight in cycles but none of us has really not ever been overweight. I am sorry for what happened to you and hopefully you can get better soon and then participate in all the activity you want.

I began to put on weight after an accident prevented me from getting the amount of exercise I used to take. Over the years my weight rose and fell but I could never get back to the weight I used to be. Now I have some difficulty with walking, my joints are in a bad way and I get breathless if I try to climb the stairs.
I know I should be trying to lose the weight but no matter how hard I try, I am stuck with being overweight. I can't take the exercise to help me lose the weight, so I guess I will have to accept the fact that I'm a fatty :-D

That sounds like incentive to sue the doctor you had at the time. You have health problems because of a procedure that I assume is simple enough. I guess I got my weight from just eating from boredom and stress and depression, laziness keeps me from burning it off but I dont' gain any either.

Hi and welcome to mylot!
I gained weight a couple of years ago. I quit smoking (and eat hard candy until my mollars gave up and had to go to the dentist. Besides that, I had a hysterectomy. All that helped a change my metabolism. I not only gained weight but put on weight mainly in my tummy. I want to lose weight but I´m sort of specting a miracle as I don´t really do enough about it. Ihave read about different diets, even decided which one I wanted to follow. But that is not enough: I have to do it. I hope I´ll start tomorrow.

I think I really have a very slow metabolism. Also, I am sedentary. I don't move a lot.

I went to the mall a few hours ago and there were this people who were giving some free fat analysis and I tried it cause I was worried with my weight. But good thing I was normal and I am not overweight yet. I thought I was and I am glad I am aware now. But it doesnt mean that I can still eat any thing I like even though they are not very healthy food. I am just so glad that I am not overweight.

I watch the show the Biggest Loser. Though it sounds like a degrading show for overweight people, I actually thoroughly enjoy it because of the heart and dedication all the contestants have. I gained weight because as a child my parents always wanted me to eat. After I ran cross country I got skinny and ate whatever I wanted to. After running cross country I still ate whatever I wanted but did not maintain my strict running regiment, thus I gained everything back and more. Now I'm just lazy to workout and it is difficult to get a good routine going on because I do not like working out by myself, due to the team mentality I adopted from running cross country.

It's sad that you had all these medical problems. I hope things will be better with you. I, myself, has been overweight since birth. And I never lost weight even if I focus on diet or physical activities. Now I am on my 30's I don't mind too much anymore of any weight loss program because the more I stress out the more I gained weight. As long as I know I do a bit of physical activities and that I am not lazy, I feel ok already. But of course, undeniably it's the choices of food also and less physical exercises that gets me gain more weight, it's just annoying that I easily gain weight for a simple eating, while there are some people that whatever they eat, they still stay slim. But anyway, healthy wise, I don't have any problem, sugar, blood pressure and heart are all normal. And most importantly, my man loves me very much the way I am.
Happy mylotting!Wish you good health.
