How claustrophobic are you?

Don't like being in an enclosed space - Claustrophobic in tight spaces

One of my biggest fears is waking up in an enclosed space. I don't like the feeling of not being able to move freely. But I'm not sure if I would call it a fear, I just most likely would panic if I were in a tight place. I also hate being in a crowd. If I had to be in a group of people, I would chose to be on the sidelines. Never in the middle. How about you? Are you claustrophobic? Which situations don't you like? How do you deal with it? At Christmas, I sometimes hate Santa Claus. Does that add to my claustrophobia?

I'm also a claustrophobic person. i hate going to a room which is so enclosed, except if the room has air conditioning. otherwise, i'll surely faint or get dizzy. I also hate being in a crowd. I just can't breathe when confronted with these situations. My immediately remedy is to search for an open space. and breathe.

Thank goodness that you're a lawyer! Because if you were thrown into a room with a crowd of people, you would be in the center of it, with every little bit of open space available delivering your statements. Not to mention that every pair of eyes will be on you, but that's for a different discussion. Thanks.

i also hate being in the crowd and prefer the side lines and i also just go crazy when someone is standing between me and the door or between me and the source of light - window or lamp and i remember when i was small i read that there was an ancient punishment to lock you in a cell where you cannot stand in full height and when you lay down to sleep you cannot stretch in full length and that scared me for a long, long time

Hello EmilSpasov. My mind refuses to comprehend the ancient punishment you just described. I guess that would be my ultimate fear. And would describe how much a claustrophobic I am. I hope to be never put in that situation. Thanks.

I love fresh air. I watch too much Law & Order SVU; I have nightmares about being suffocated or drowning. I drive with my windows all the way down (assuming it's nice out..which, it thankfully IS!) and the hellish 10 hour plane ride I just endured was... hellish. lol. Only about after hour 6 or so though. Something about being in an enclosed space with tons of people (some who apparently didn't believe in personal hygiene..) - that freaks me out a bit. I don't know if that counts, but I'm throwin it out there. lol. I can understand where you're coming from being in a crowd. I always hated concerts where you had to squeeze into this tiny space with people pushed up around you - hardly able to breathe! It's crazy. I guess I'm a little claustrophobic too.

Uggh! That would be worse! In a 10-hour enclosed-plane ride with somebody having personal hygiene issues. I would feel as if the air which is circulating in that small space would be tainted. I might just stick my face near the vents so that I get first whiff of the fresh air that comes in. And this is not even claustrophobia! Really nice picture. Have I said that already?

I'm also a bit claustrophobic. I don't like it when I'm in an enclosed space and I can't breathe freely. I hate it when I feel like I'm smothering. I also don't like it when someone's hugging me too tight and I can't breathe properly. I avoid buses and trains whenever I can because I hate it when there are so many people surrounding me.

Hello angelajoy. I hope that you've gotten yourself a big car with lots of space inside so that you don't have to contend yourself with crowded buses and trains when you commute within your city. Thanks for the response.

I don't know if my recent problem is a case of claustrophobia, but if it's too dark in my bedroom at night I wake up in sweats not knowing where I am with a feeling of being closed in. I simply panic if I cannot see anything around me. My daughters bedroom is at the back of the house and it is pitch black, you cannot even see your hand if you hold it up to your face. I just know I could never sleep in there.

Hello Beautyfactor. I'm also not sure if our 'claustrophobia' is related, because my fear is more of not being able to physically move. Although I have had experiences in the past where I know my mind is awake, and all I can see is darkness, and I can't physically move. Hope that your situation gets better. And thanks for the response.

Rather than having claustrophobia, I think I have coulrophobia, since I am way more scared of clowns than I am of Santa. :-) Seriously, I am claustrophobic at times but it really does depend on the situation. For example, I was stuck between floors in an elevator at work on my own and didn't like it one bit, yet I have been stuck in the same elevator with a group of workmates and found the situation quite entertaining. I suppose there is safety in numbers and, at the time, laughing and socialising with co-workers beat actually working. Usually I get terribly claustrophobic amongst crowds and can't wait to escape but in a crowded mosh pit at concerts, the fear, let alone escape, doesn't even occur to me. It must be mind over matter. I figure, if I'm having fun, I forget my fears. This probably explains why, when I am in a stifling, airless lecture room listening to someone drone on, I will make any excuse to get a few minutes of fresh air. However, I suspect if Vin Diesel or another heart throb was the lecturer, I'd probably not notice the lack of air. And, of course, the only time I could happily climb into a tiny blue box would be if it was the TARDIS since it is bigger on the inside.

Hello RangaGirl. I think you may be on to something. That fun would be the regular anti-dote for whatever fear ailing us. Specially if it has something to do with crowds. I think if we preoccupy our minds with fun, then the less it will fill up with fear, and 'what-if' situations. Thanks for responding.

I think I have a little bit of the same. For heights and falling. I try not to go high-open spaces. And I specially avoid looking down. Thanks.

Hello vrajeshpilathottahi! I hope that you don't do that often. Travel by bus which can cause you anxiety at impending danger. Keep safe! Thanks.

Hey bounce! I am claustrophobic too so I understand perfectly how you feel! I hate being in closed spaces and crowds! I prefer being on the outside of a crowd so that I don't get squished and I can get out and get air if I need to! I hate flying and it makes it worse that airplanes are so claustrophobic! I have to fly soon again and I so dread it because of my fear of flying and being in closed in!

Hi Opal. Sorry for this late response. I don't really feel claustrophobic inside a plane. But I do have to sit on the aisle all the time so that it'll be easier for me to stand up and walk around the plane when I get restless, specially on very long flights. Thanks.

hmmm the feeling of being trapped. I don't get that feeling in tight spaces. As long as there is a way out i'm all good. But I don't like crowds. People are stupid, and they do stupid things. Being in a crowd of stupid people is never a good thing. Space people i need my space.

That would indeed be added stress! Not only are you in a crowd, but one that you deem to be stupid. It'll just make me step way, way back. Away from whatever crowd that is. I would surely hate for something bad to happen, and start that crowd in a panic. I would be the one to panic first. Thanks for the response.

I guess you could say i am fortunate not to have any claustrophobic tendencies. Close spaces was never a problem for me. High places was a completely different story. I don't think you need to worry about Santa Claus with your fears of claustrophobia. If i find myself in a fearful place or situation, i close my eyes, take a deep breath and see myself in a happy place. it helps to ease the tension just a bit.

I think I also have a thing for high places. Not really a fear, but a sudden thought of 'what if'. A mental image of me falling, and a splat of myself on the ground. And because of this, I dare not close my eyes, I might trip and fall. Thanks for responding!

Well as a big person, it tends to reason that closed spaces are not my thing. In fact, I really hated those classes in high school where they had the desks crunched up together. Of course, just adding to the fun and games, it was a desk that a five year old mind have a bit of difficulty finding a comfortable position in. And this was in high school, so yeah, closed spaces are something that I do not like. Another one is at the lunch table. I always had to sit at the end of the bench at the table. Otherwise, I found that we were packed in their like tuna. Not exactly the most comfortable experience. Closed quarters bother me in many ways. I would not put myself in my position if I had the chance. I would even sit on the floor if it meant that I would have some room to breathe.

Hello megamatt. I'm sorry that you've had such a terrible time in highschool. I hope by now you don't get into those terrible situations anymore. Or that your means enable you to afford as much space as you need, whenever or wherever you need it. Thanks for the response.
