How to cope with the death of your pet?

My pet dog died last November and until now I still feel some pain whenever I saw his pictures and even seeing other dogs. Losing a dear pet is different when you lose a love one because not all people understand how you feel grief especially those people who do not own a pet themselves or love their pets as much as you love yours.
So how about you? How do you deal with the lost?
By the way this is a link to the photo of my beloved pet:

I always feel awful when my any of my pets die but as I live in a central street my kittens are often hit by cars so soon or later I became a bit more used to it.I am every time sad when I see domething like that but I cannot do anything to change the situation so I just take another kitty at home

Sorry for your loss. Was a cute doggy :D. Other people don't understand when you lose pets. But, some people are even less understanding when, it isnt a traditional pet (cat, dog, rabbit). I've just lost one of my pets this week and I haven't stopped crying. And a "non traditional pet", so some people think im stupid for crying over a pet rat but, she was lovely. We've still got two, so got to be strong for them, one of them being Frenchy's sister. I think, most people feel some guilt, even though they have no reason to. I'm still finding a way to cope for mine but, we buried her in my partners mums garden and we visit it every time we're there. Tell her we love her and miss her. Even at home, at night/morning, we're saying hello to the girls, saying we love them, more than we used to say it and saying a hello morning/night to Frenchy and telling her we love it. Just, into the air but, it helps. Sometimes makes me cry but, helps.

I can understand where you are coming from. It is mostly be misunderstood if you pet is a rat since not all people like rats and some of them even kill them. I think letting out the emotions help too even if it is through crying. Like the ame of your pet, Frenchy.

Ihad to put my Lil Girl down, she had bone cancer. She was hanging on to the very end, I let it go to far because I didn't want to let her go. When I did take her in she new what was going on and didn't put up a fuss, she was in to much pane, even though she was medicated most of the time untill I took her in.
To this day I can still hear her. She was a lil terror. She had to get the last word in even when she new , NO means No. She would listen, do what she was told, look at me then grind her teeth looking at me or just give a lil growl. That is why I called her my lil Girl. Her name was Gheyska'.
REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U..

That was a sad story of yours. There are really things that although we expect to happen but then again when in finally happens no matter how emotionally prepared you are, you will still be hurt. And I think that one reason we love our pets is that they love us unconditionally. They are not like some people who betray you after all you have done good.

I had a precious dog for 13 years. She went everywhere with me just about. I even hated to leave her when I went to church, because I hated for her to have to be alone. Baby was half chihuahua and half feist, so she was a small-framed dog.
She was black and white, and she was my sweetheart.
Before she became sick, she weighed 13 lbs., after she started being disabled, she weighed 9 lbs. She was doctored for pain for awhile, but it got to where she was miserable and the medicine only helped for 30 minutes or so. She had a degenerative muscle disease that started at her backend and was moving forward.
I wanted her to die with dignity, so I held her while the dr. did the deed. Oh, it was so difficult. Oh God!
Anyway, it was so difficult. I could only grieve about it. Nothning could stop that. I have a beautiful framed picture of her in my office. I since have been given a tiny chihuahua who is now 3 years old. I love my new dog, but I miss baby and reminisce alot.

That is one thing i do not want to experience, mercy killing. I know it was good for the pet but me having to decide it is itself painful. I can just imagine how painful it was for you. I think our lost pets can never be replaced even if a new one comes along.

That is very sad to hear. I'm sorry. I haven't experience that yet. Why did he die? Being old? I have a cat once.. We found him as a little kitten and I still wonder where did he go until now. He was with us for 7 years. I last saw him on December 28 2007. when he was feeling weak. The night after that He never came back. He was really weak and I knew his time was coming. He disappeared. So we search for him and never got found. So I supposed I can't say how I felt that time but we know he is at peace already. But still I'm sad we never got his body with us.

I lost my pet African lovebird recently too. I raised him and hand fed him when he was a chick because the mother was a bit aggressive towards him. So, he is quite tame and you can play with him. The only bad thing is that he keeps on gnawing on hands and thumbs which can be quite painful. He also knows how to get out of his cage, but I would have to catch him because I have four cats roaming around. He was able to get out of his cage last week and because of the intense summer heat, it was late afternoon when I checked on him and he was no longer there.
