I just have to add...holy crap! If you raise your kids right, they won't steal or commit felonies with their allowance.

I believe that as soon as children are old enough to not eat money, you should start giving them money. Children need to learn how to save money, spend money, and give money, and the sooner they learn this, the better. It doesn't have to be a lot of money, and my parents used the "dollar per year" formula, based on my age. If/when I asked them for more, I had to plead my case. If it was a legitimate reason (like I wanted to go to a birthday party and I wanted to buy a particular gift), they would allow me the extra. Very early on I learned the value of a dollar, and how to use it, and this gave me incentive to go out and get my first job at a young age, when all of my friends were sponging off their parents.

yes you are very right about teaching the kids the use and value of the hard earned money. they must know the consequences of of misusing the money since, not all the kids want to listen to what the elders say.
