Has anyone ever purchased jewelry online?

I'm thinking about getting a necklace for my wife, but I don't really know too much about jewelery in the first place. I was thinking that shopping online could take away the uncomfortableness that comes with shopping in the store where I don't know much and feel like I'm being taken advantage of by the salespeople.
But, is there any reason why you shouldn't be buying jewelry sight unseen like that? Is it safe to buy online? I was reading a little bit about it ( http://www.onlinejewelerreview.com/ ) but I'm just not sure.
I shop online a lot. I buy a ton of books online, I've even bought plane tickets online before. But I don't know about something like jewelry, if that's the kind of thing you should be buying online or not.
Opinions?
If you ever bought any online, were you happy with your purchase?
Thanks.

Well no I haven't shopped for jewelry online yet in fact recently I posted a topic about where to find the best place to shop for casual jewelry online as for shopping for the really fine kind of jewelry I would not shop online for that sort, just the casual stuff may some sterling silver or somthing that would be less risky to buy online.

I like to shop for my wife at overstock.com they have a very good selection of products there and it seems to be a good value.

Almost all of the jewelry I own was bought online. My aunt introduced me to JTV.com way back when I was in middle school. I wouldn't buy jewelry online from a place like Ebay, but I'm comfortable getting things from JTV. The pieces I've bought have all been exactly as described. I had several appraised for my renters' insurance policy, and they were all valued above what I paid for them by the appraiser. They have a 30 day return policy if you're not happy with the items when they arrive.
Just be sure you research any site that you want to order from. Look for reviews of it before you buy, and make sure you pay with a credit or debit card that will allow you to file a chargeback if you don't receive what you order and you can't get problems resolved with customer service.

There's no harm in buying online just need to check certified site on the net and then the actual size of the piece in case it is a jewelery 'cause what is seen in the photo is blown up !
Yes,....i have bought pearls set, semi precious stone n rudraksh from on line stores and was satisfied !
The only precaution should be taken while paying through your credit card ! Better if its secured !

I dont think I would like to buy jewelery online as I would much rather see and feel the quality of the item I was going to but. I do alot of shopping online, for books, music, and items like that, but some things I would not want to buy before actually seeing them. Fresh fruit and vegetables is another thing I would not buy when I shop for groceries online.
I understand what you mean when you talk about feeling uncomfortable about buying certain items in-store but the salespeople arewell trained to help you, the more they help the better the chance of you returning to purchase more goods. Which can only be good for them.
Have a happy shopping day.
