New Pet

I've been at college for the past four years, and the university requires every student to live on university sponsored or owned housing. I had cats when I was younger. But I haven't been able to have a pet for the past four years. Next year I'll have my own apartment again, and hopefully will be getting a new kitty!! I really want a kitten, I always loved having the kitten and bonding with my new pet as it grew up. I'll have to start looking for baby kitties in the shelters soon.

Just remember when you get your own place they may require you to have your pet "fixed", declawed wich won't be cheap , plus an additional security deposit for any damage they could do to your apt. Aside from that! If we had the room I'd love more cats but our 3 in our small house is plenty!

Yep, I've noticed this about a lot of the apartments I've been looking at. Plus most shelters require that you at least get your new pet spayed or neutered, so I'll just have to make sure to save up that money before I get my new pet.

Most shelters offer reduced rate spaying and neutering. My local shelter only charges $35 for neutering and $45 for spaying. When I had my cats neutered several years ago, my vet charged over a $100 per cat. Something to ask about when you are looking.

Of course it won't be cheap, but I completely understand how you feel. I always had animals growing up and when I got to college I was forced to not have them anymore and I was pretty heartbroken. Next year will be my first year being able to get an animal and as much as I want to get a doggie, I know that a kitty will be much easier to take care of.

I know, I really want a dog too. I realized the same thing though, that they can be pretty high maintenance. I'm starting grad school with a teaching position in the fall, so I figured I shouldn't take on anything that required too much attention.

Make sure that you are allowed to have a cat in your apartment hun, not all landlords are animal lovers. When you find your special feline, you may well have to spend a lot of time training for the litter tray too, unless you are lucky enough to have an outdoor space for the cat to go out. The shelters are always full of lovely cats waiting for a loving home, have you ever considered getting an older cat.
