I don't know alot about Linux(I assume) because I've never used it, but their are some things I've heard that make me really admire it and possibly want to use it. The first thing being it avoids alot or maybe even all the computer viruses someone can get with the Windows Operating System. The second being that its free to acquire. Is it really worth it? Also what are its disadvantages when compared to Windows for the people who have used it.

I think most computer users use Windows because it is the most popular and convenient operating system. Compare to Windows, Linux is not so easy. But most of important, I am afraid whether more hardwares support it, such as the digital products. Some can use directly in Windows, but it may not work properly in Linux. Besides, not many softwares support Linux, too. But the advantage of Linus is it will have less possibilities to have computer virus. I love China

yes thats the one thing i would not like about linux. i don't think much software is compatible with it.

Windows softwares don't run well on linux, of course, bcz they're too different operating systems! If a software doesn't have a linux version, just look for an alternative, most of the time, there're alternatives for linux. Just use windows software on linux sparingly, when there're no alternatives, and you have no other choices, otherwise, look for a linux alternative!

sorry for the typo, "two different", not "too different"

there are number of good and bad things in linux. i have used linux but mostly prefer windows. linux is free, window is not. linux is more secure than windows. linux is also customizable through source but windows in not. but the best thing in windows, they improve gui to make it more user friendly which also prompt linux to be more user friendly.

Windows has had the same gui since windows 95, they haven't really improved anything... they really make it worse when they released Windows Vista but now they are back on track with Windows 7. I'm saying this like a linux user who thinks that linux is as user friendly as windows. It may even be more user friendly, on linux you can download and install software without having to browse first to get your software and then install it with lots of nextnextnext buttons. On linux you just open your software manager and install what you want (I'm an Ubuntu user and I like the debian way: apt-get install ...).

I think there are two main disadvantages: 1. You need to learn a different thing to do what you do now on Windows. Most linux distributions are very user friendly but from time to time you'll need to use the console and that's not what the average Windows user is used to. 2. You won't have all the software you have on Windows. That's true but it's most likely that there is a linux alternative to the software you use more. For Office there is OpenOffice just to give one example. What you won't find on linux is a real alternative to AutoCAD so if you are a CAD user you should first take a look at what are the linux alternatives to AutoCAD. Also if you are a gamer you should know that most of the games you can find on windows does not run on linux, altought there are projects like cedega that let you run your windows games on linux. But there are some advantages too: 1. Linux is way cooler than Windows. 2. You can stop worrying about viruses and malware. There are some security risk when using Linux but nothing compared to Windows. 3. Linux is free software (or it's most free software than privative one) so if you value your freedom you should use linux 4. The Geeks will rule this world some day, and when that day comes you will be glad that you use Linux ;-)

as a user of both operative system an system administrator I have to say that using linux or windows isnt a trend. In fact what I recommend is to base your decision in your needs. Look linux is not virus free as people might think, yes they dont have officially recognized linux but as every software you can find exploits on it that cause the same issues as a virus. if you want to work and have an stable system i recommend linux. but if you are more an end user and likes video game use windows. there are more games for windows than to linux. beside the hardware companies focus more on that so you get more support in performance in a video card designed for gaming in windows than linux basically because the hardware manufacturers focus in the market. if you use basic stuffs or office stuff only. linux is the best. easy and fast to configure and specially when you dont have savvys users you just have to configure once and that is all. no problems that they might touch something and screw the computer.

i'm not a pc gamer but instead a console gamer and always have been so far. linux would be good for one of my computers which i will probably consider since i don't want to pay for extra virus protection for another computer.

see that is the correct approach, if you use the basic stuffs for working like the office suit or similar you can do that on linux, they come free and are really reliable. using a friendly user version like ubuntu, kubuntu or fedora might help you to do the transition smoother...

linux is a UNIX like. and it never having a virus. Free Software Most software can be obtained without cost for Linux. For example, one thing that has kept people from Linux is the lack of office software. That has changed with Open Office, and now you can edit documents and presentations from the popular Microsoft software. DISADVANTAGE OF LINUX I won't lie to you; Linux isI won't lie to you; Linux is going to take some time to learn. I know that our society likes to be instantly gratified. Learning Linux is definitely worth your time, but to really master it, you will need to spend some good time in front of your machine tinkering with things. Don't expect to be an expert after reading something like “Linux for Dummies”. If you are contemplating this for your company, you will need to budget some money for training and learning time. Not all hardware compatible Some of the latest and greatest hardware that is being produced is not compatible with Linux. The people that contribute program code and drivers to the Linux kernel are great at including support fairly quickly.Until that time, not everything you buy for hardware in your system may work. I've had to rely on third-party drivers and other means to make hardware like a new Ethernet card work. but you this linux to know if this good or not. and if you dont want just install other OS.
