Hi guys, I'd like to create a benchmark. How much is the regular rate for freelance writers? Let's say that you are to write 500 words minimum. How much should one be charging? Is it based on the number of words?

Hi Laydee, there is no standard rate for article writing. If you want to find serious buyers, you can take a look at Constant-Content. A 500 words article can command a selling price of $100, provided you are willing to give up your rights to the article. If you want to retain the rights and build up a long term passive income stream, you may want to join Helium or Associated Content. Your articles have the potential to earn passive income for a long time. Many webmasters are paying a rate of just $2 to $4 for 400-words articles. Their purpose is to submit to article directories, and build up links to their websites. They do not require good quality articles, and they do not need the writers to do any research. If you take a look at Ezinearticles, you will have an idea of the quality for those bulk writers. What you need to do is to take a few key points here and there and produce an original article. That probably needs just ten minutes to earn that $4.

Thank you for giving your thoughts on this. Very well said. For starters the standard rate is $3 for 500 words. That's based on experience.

It's truly pitiful some of the rates offered, but writers should think of offering their services to as many companies as possible. If a writer is not earning a sufficient income for articles, then the writer is doing something wrong.
