Do you search the previous discussions before starting a new one?

I do that mylotters and i think everyone should. But I recently saw that someone had started a similar discussion as mine after my discussion. And the most annoying part was that it had got more responses than what i have got. I know that the question was framed in a different manner and the description was also different. I don't even blame her/him because search engines are very words specific and a similar question with different words might not be displayed on searching. Is there a solution to this?

Hi, Yes a few of my discussions were deleted as those topics were already discussed here. I have also noticed something. If the same kind of topic is being discussed again and again, that will decrease its gravity, and people may not be interested anymore as they were at the very first occurrence of the discussion. Search engines do indeed crawl on the basis of word contents, titles or tags. A tag is the most important thing as per my knowledge. Even if you alter a few word or delete some of them or add couple new, the search engine may recognize it as an entirely different thing. Now this is indeed deceptive. The only close solution can be to be more generalized in your search. What I mean to say is that to get a more exhaustive result we should only use the keywords and if possible only one word at a time. Thanks. God bless you

Thanks getbiswa2000 , Your response certainly helped me. I ll try and be more general in the search and use one word at a time.

Always, but It is normal there is a similar discussion, what you haven't managed to find with mylot search engine. It is important to use search on mylot, because we will see the message for deleted post very often, If we don't do this.

I do try to check before I post but having said that, when you consider the thousands of members of MyLot, there are bound to be very similar discussions being posted on a daily basis. I check most of the time.

Yes I do that now. When I was new here at mylot I asked some questions too but I think I did it only once and I've read the FAQs and understood it better. I don't want to start a discussion and at the end it will just be deleted. It would be such a waste of time in that case.

As far as I am concerned, I think I seldom have a searching just before I am going to post a topic here. If I hvae a question in my daily life, I think I will bring it to mylot ,where I think I can find th ebest ways to slove it. And it actuually does. When I have some problems, i will usually find th eanswer here. I am so glad to be in mylot here.Have a nice day.

No, I do not. myLot gives me full freedom to start one of my choice and I like their system of deleting the discussions that have been done countless times before - I do not need to do the search - the admin does the deleting.

But deleting brings down your mylot reputation, and you certainly wont like that, will you?

Although, like you have said, the search engines are word specific, I think the only sensible solution is to do a "discussion" search in MyLot before starting a new discussion. I believe it is in the guidelines that asks us to do this any. I am not one to always search but am trying to do so more. The new MyLot search option is very useful and I think we all should be using it more Plus We can be rewarded for doing so. I searched something the other day and a little window popped up saying that I was rewarded, I think $0.10. Sweet. Discussion searching a topic in Mylot, before we post can give us back similar discussions in which case we can view and learn and not have to post because it had already been posted. Sometimes the words maybe different as well as body of the discussion. Depending on the highlights, we may still be able to post the discussion we were wanting to with out posting a discussion that is too similar, therefore being a duplicate. Searching MyLot discussions is also fun! I would encourage it and need to search more before posting discussions myself. Thanks for asking!

I don't really start all that many discussions, so I don't really do a search first. I have not had any problem though, starting a similar discussion to anyone else, as all of the ones I have done so far, have been original and not copied or changed from other discussions. I would rather respond to discussions already on the board, as it is much easier because I don't have to come up with a topic of my own. I think though I have done one search for a topic that hasn't been that hasn't been posted, so I might eventually start that discussion one of these days. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

sometimes i did but i seldom do that since im online everyday so i know if the question is not yet asked recently. even if you have the same but if its already after many months and years and as long as you have different content then i guess its allowed.

That is a consideration that is always in mind. I mean, you really do not want to go back over the same old ground. Yet, there are times where it might not be obvious that these are old questions. I mean the same questions could be reworded about three different ways or more and become the same exact thing. Even if they are a bit apart, it does stand to reason that many of the people will tire over the same questions. There are a handful of times where the same question can seem fresh, even if it is spread over a period of months. That is the problem. Exactly when is a question considered fresh again. Not to mention that it might be hard to find the things that are completely different but in the end, they are rather similar. The only way I guess it to scan over several topics where the questions might pop in over the last couple of days or so. That is about the only solution but that is a time consuming process and more time that it might be worth to just to post a question.

Hi megamatt, I totally agree with you. But I don't anyone prefer scanning through related posts and discussions. Do you do that?

I have almost given up searching. Primarily because the search engine is so odd! It brings up old stuff all the time for me. Sometimes it goes to the web, whereas other times it brings up discussions. The results we get are not listed according to date, which they could easily be. Then having to do two searches each time isn't convenient, although the "tags" search isn't generally useful. The low down is this, if the search engine worked better I promise that I would use it!

Hi Dark_void23, I think this happens with all of us. I appreciate your honest reply and the fact that you are trying to make it a habit is far more important. Thanks.
