Why cant TV shows END when they are suppose to?

i love unsolved mysteries which usually comes on after CSI late at night on spike.. i dont know how many times 10 plus minutes is all CSI and then of course it chops off the last of unsolved mysteries..
i dont watch spike much so i dont know if it has a lot of live stuff on there that maybe goes over the time slot ALL THE TIME but this is crazy! i set my dvr and then only get part of the show! i would rather them run CSI 10 minutes late and have the last 20 infomercials and then start out unsolved mysteries so i dont miss anything!
any one know why this happens? it happens too often to be a fluke and i dont see why the heck these people cant figure out how to run their TV station!! GRRRRR

Doesnt spike run a lot of boxing and/or fighting matches?? If they do, those can go longer than plan...which run into other shows..cause ya know you just cant go without seeing who one the fight. Its very annoying and when i would watch tv regularly it happened alot to me during certain sport seasons.

sports makes sense but like some docs stop right at the top of the hour instead of before the hour starts ie 7:00-8:00 so the show after it starts at more like 8:01 so you lose the last minute of the doc and the doc before the one you record is showing in the beginning.. and the local channels are starting to show them being schedules as going over 1-2 minutes which means it might overlap and override something else on my dvr grr
