I have been trying to lose weight for the past two weeks and have been exercising about an hour a day. but my friends have told me that it is counterproductive to do that and I should allow my body to rest in between workouts? what do you guys think?

I work out every single day, and have done so for at least the past 6 months. In that time I've lost 70 pounds. I've never heard that you need to take a day off from working out.
What I have heard is that when you're lifting weights you do need to give that particular muscle group a break. That's why they suggest working your arms one day, then your legs the next, and switch it every other day.
But as far as cardio work outs are concerned, there's nothing wrong with doing it everyday. I know a lot of people at my gym who are there daily, including weekends.

Select an exercise pattern to suit your life style. All of us have different life styles and professions so there is no sense in trying to follow the book strictly. Try and follow an exercise routine that is suitable for you. You have to understand that even more important than the exercise it is sticking to it. So unless you choose something that can suit your life style, you are not going to stick on to it.

In my opinions, if you are working out and aiming for something. Then the everyday workout should be done and there is a need for consistency everytime we workout.
I went to gym before and I was advice by my personal trainer at that time that it would be better to work out everyday so that you can achieve your goal really easy and fast.
