Well simply because they have to understand the technicalitlies of flying an aircraft responsibly. They also have to keep calm under pressure or in the event of an accident and be able to fly the plane manually and think quickly.

hi rahulral29 because they are not on auto pilot all the time and if auto pilot fails they have to know how to manually fly the plane as there is much more to flying a commercial plane than putting it on autopilot as they have to know what all the controls and all the readings mean, in other words they have to know how to fly the damned plane.
