can i delete someone from being a friend without notification to him/her?

I am still new to this community but I regret that I already gained a friend whose discussions I don't really want to receive any notification from anymore because I am personally getting annoyed. :( You see, I really try to open all the notifications I receive in my personal email because I would love to post comment on all my friends' discussions even if they were already about a day or two late before I do so. But there is really one that I already try to avoid but can't since notification from Mylot displays the topic. Can I delete this friend without him/her knowing or can I block the notifications informing me of the discussions coming from him/her and retain notifications from all other friends? I have nothing against the person since he/she has her own personal views in life that of course, may really be opposite that of mine but just so I don't lose my interest when I'm logged in, I wish I can avoid being informed that he/she posted such discussion. I hope nobody gets offended, I just want peace of mind while working...
