Don't you just hate seeing poor people?

Last weekend, our family had gone out for dinner. On our way home, while I was looking outside by the car window, I saw an old lady who is selling sampaguita (jasmine). She approached our car and offered us the flowers, (in the Philippines, you'll see a lot of jasmine vendors almost everywhere especially in churches and roadsides). My dad turned her down. It was past 12 midnight and she looked very tired. She approached a small kid lying in the grass sleeping with only a small piece of carton as her bed. When I saw that kid, my heart broke. I hate seeing poor people. especially the kids. I hate the fact that here I am, eating delicious food, sleeping in a very comfortable bed, graduated from college while they sleep on pieces of cartons or newspapers, barely eating because of the lack of money. It almost brings me to tears whenever I see kids like that. When I see street kids and poor people, I always wish I have the power to give them a better life. =(

I know what you mean. I have been to your country and it is a pitiful sight even in the middle of the city these helpless people make their homes below staircases with few children on tow. I don't think they deserve to be pitied because they are still young and able to look for jobs. There is a lot of question asked on the government who failed to upgrade the livelihood of her citizens. It is always happening in countries where the economy is imbalance as the wealth of the nation is not being enjoyed by all her people.

I've been to the Philippines twice. I like your country and the food. I have not visited all the interesting sites there. I find your country beautiful and the people are friendly. But shopping is not cheap except for divisoria. Might be going there again next year.

Hi zandi458. How did you like the Philippines so far. Thanks for visiting our country. I hope that that pitiful sight you saw didn't made you think that the Philippines is an awful country. The Philippines is great. It's just that most of the government officials are not honest that's why many people have no homes and jobs.

I don't hate to see them. I feel sad when I see them especially the kids who I think had never experienced a good life since they were born.

My friend, it is heartbreaking to see this people. For me, it breaks my heart to know that there are people in the world that do not know it is a choice they make, how their live will go.
The people that have giving up, and resigned themselves to this kind of life, is such a sad thing to me. I firmly believe that where we are in life is a choice we make, I have not always believed this, and when I first heard the concept I scoffed at it, now however, I know better.
Every choice we make, brings us the life we desire deep inside ourselves, when we give up though, the universe will bring us down. It has to be a constant, positive choice to improve, you have to work at it. Anyone can succeed when they put their minds to it, many of the richest people in the world, today, and throughout the modern times started off as very very poor. Then chose to do something about, and stuck to their choice until it payed off for them. The trick is to never give up on your dreams, and constantly improve yourself.
With Love and Appreciation.

Our thoughts our things, and we choose our destiny.
Keep the Dream alive, and thrive, not just survive.
I love you.

That's true cj. Our future depends on every choice we make in life. There are many rich Filipinos all over the world that are formerly poor. They struggled through, keeping their dreams in their minds and making it possible. In life, everything is possible. Dream, believe, survive.

I will never hate seeing them. but i hate the government for not reaching their hands to the less fornunates, street childrens, beggars, etc.. who have nothing but their empty stomach, rugged clothes and dirty hands. who among those would want to live without anything but their courage to face the reality. like you, my heart also broke into pieces everytime i see them. that's why i always have an extra gifts everytime i go home for my annual vacation.

That's very thoughtful of you. You're so kind. I just wish I can give them something more to look forward to in life. I agree with you. Government officials have always been like that. The funds that was supposed to be helping the unfortunate ones were all in their pockets.

I don't hate seeing them, but I hate the fact that they are poor and I am not... I mean that life isn't fair.
Some "poor" people go home with a BMW in London, or I don't know where, but there are some beggars that are millionaires in fact. That is even more frustrating
Don't worry too much though, you can't do SO MUCH about their poorness, but you could give them a few dollars/euros sometimes if you have enough.

I do not like seeing poor people either. The poor people in the United States and even Mexico are rich compared to the level of poverty I observed in the Philippines when I visited there a few years back. There are squatters everywhere that live in cardboard boxes with torn clothing. I was severely humbled when I went to the Philippines and I myself knew how lucky I was to have what I have. All I can think is that hopefully there will be justice in the end.
The problem is if an individual gives money to one poor person, then they will get swamped by the other poor people. This is why it has been said that people are not supposed to give money to the poor. I don't think what your dad did was wrong, it is just unfortunate that the atrocity known as poverty puts people in that situation.

It is very depressing. Especially nowadays I'm sure that it is even more difficult to find a job. This reminds me of my discussion of why bad things happen to good people. I'm sure many of the people on the streets are actually good people who just have bad luck. Hopefully they will be happier in a better place one day. =)

I know my dad wasn't wrong. Even I, don't give money to poor people. It's just so sad to see those kids in the streets while they were supposed to be in school preparing for their future.

I don't think that life is fair. The best things in life to have are good health, good luck and happiness. It would be excellent if every person in the world had a house to live in and enough food to eat on their table. I feel sorry for people that have to live on the streets in cardboard boxes. I wish I had to ability to get these very poor people a better time in life. It is the street children that I feel most sorry for.
I am very keen on traveling to different countries. I went on a trip to Cape Town and the Garden Route in South Africa last year. There I saw places where the rich people lived in the coastal suburbs. I also made a point of visiting a poor township. It opened my eyes to the poverty in South Africa and I liked the people. By paying a 50 Rand tour fee I added money to their economy. I felt happy when I found out about the charity efforts of a company in Ireland.
It is lovely to give food to the very poor people. There is a magazine called 'The Big Issue' which street people sell in my home country. I am so happy to travel the world and spend money at local businesses. I stay in a locally owned guest house. I get into the neighborhood and make a small difference to very poor people like those in the African township.

Yes it is sad.
I see a lot of people here in Berlin, eating out of garbage cans.
Even in the Netherlands, same story.
Why? It is not needed they can get help. But some are so lost they don't want help anymore.
It is sad.
You can't help them, they can only help themselves.
Be careful to look after yourself first.
When you are safe, you can always think of ways to help others.
But don't forget yourself. First you then the rest.
Because when you come to the place that you need help, there will be no one there to help. Believe me.
Take care.

no not at all as I am sorry for them and i feel the country that you are in is not helping their citizens enough as nobody should have to live like that. Even here in the US you can go from middle class to poor in a flash, lose your job, get behind on the rent , be evicted, be homeless with no family to help you, been there and done that and thats why my son loved me enough to get me put here in this retirement center, paid for by mysocial security and ssi checks, while he is trying hard to find a job, and is help;ed bu gov. sponsored housing .The moment people think you are poor you go from middle class to "poor people" ugh, how horrible blah blah blah,as if thats going to help those poor people in any way. best to find jobs for them, and housing for them so then at least you do not have to see them anymore. And the next time you might see them you will not recognize them as they will just look like you or I. how people will look down on you once you have had badluck.sad, so sad.

Why you have nothing better to hate than hating poor people? You think someone is poor because he/she choose to become poor or you think someone selling sampaguita on the street is begging for your money , she is making a decent living by selling you something instead begging you for money, there is no reason for you to hate this old lady just because she want to sell you jasmine in the street instead of in a shopping mall, seem like you don't even know the difference between both and behave like a spoil girl grow up with a rich father. Sigh!!

You have a good heart....\question, did she offer the flowers for a fee or for free?
In any case, it must be a touching scene seeing a 'poor' woman offering a well-to-do fellow a giving.
I don't believe in poverty cos, most people that you think sleep outside the street corner have a peaceful and trouble free living than the upper class in the society. The only thing that is their daily look trouble is how to get a piece of food to eat.
Most of them are poor materially but very rich in the spirit...they calm and respectful and treat humanity with much case.
Don't hate poor people, love them and show them that, even if riches is their allusive companion, you care by your smile........
Smile!!!

The sight of them makes me mad at people who are seated in power but do nothing for them. How I wish I have the money to help them, I remembered when I saw someone bought all the sampaguitas the girl was selling outside the church, and gave some extra money.

Well, it's all because of them, why should I hate seeing them. They doesn't want to work and this is the result. Sometimes I feel very bad, as there are many who work hard but result is zero but there are mnay who don't even want to work and wants easy money and hence they are poor with so many children. They prefer begging and then I really hate this act. Don't you think so? Why not they do any work. Hard work at least pays and one is far better when they don't beg. I really hate kids begging and their parents allows too..

As far as I am concerned, I think I am a poor man. So I will not look down upon oon the poor man.I think the poor man may not so hateful. The poor are needed us the great love to them. I think if everone donates a little to the world, I think the world will be full of love. Though sometimes the poor can cheat us, but in our bottom of our heart, we must love them.

I think you mean you pity them- and I feel the same way too. Our government I think is the problem, but it's nice because there are also some foundations that help them but it seem like it's not enough and poverty here is worsening. I just hope that the corrupt politicians would miraculously have a heart..

well thats true, i wonder why there is always a difference in mankind and the differences in living. If we can really wish to remove these differences, then sure we can make a world of equality. I am planning for organizations to help them.
