Do designated "leaders" within boybands/girl groups really serve a purpose?

I posed this question a few months back in Yahoo Answers and got just one response (but a good one at that). T_T
So, myLotters, especially Kpop or Jpop lovers, here's your chance at having your opinions at that particular question.....
Perhaps more prominent in the Jpop/Kpop scenes than that of other countries, pop groups of 4 or more members have one of them assigned as their leader. Do you think that person has the real task of looking after the welfare of his/her fellow members, or is the leadership role just a label for publicity's sake?

If the leader is designated by the producer most probably has only a marketing scope. He/she is most probably chosen by this criteria : looks, charisma, eloquence etc, etc those qualities that looks good in the public eyes.
In a group of people that spend a lot of time together, artists or not, always someone take the leading, just because he/she is a natural leader. In this kind of pop group where the leader is designated just for public i think there is another one, the real leader, witch is kept secret from public eyes.
