only in the Philippines...
If you run for President in the republic of the Philippines, and you are the incumbent member of the Philippine Senate, who have still left 3 more years to serve the Filipino people, if you Lose the Candidacy you still be able to serve the Senate as Senator...
i can't understand the real essence of retaining your position as Senator...
I just want to hear all your views....

That is also a question I have in mind as well. When they ran for presidency they are not deemed resigned from their post as senators of the country. I am wondering why maybe that is something in the law that does not forbid them from running for higher position. I just do not know if that remains the same with US laws.

I don't exactly know if it is prohibited or not but if it is not, it is a loop hole in our policies. You cannot sit in 2 positions.. higher position to serve the people better? I dont think so...
Aiming for a position in government now is not anymore aiming t serve the people. but rather to serve their pocket well.

I think what should happen is when a senator runs for another position, he or she should resign from their current post. I think it's for delicadeza or something and it would also restrict a person from using his or her post's resources. I'm not familiar with US law so I don't know if this is their practice over there.

Lol, it isn't only in the Philipines. We have many senators and represenatives that run for president here and if they lose, they still continue to serve their congressional seats. I personaly dont see a problem with it myself. I dont think someone here should have to give up their congressional seat simply because they lose a presidential bid.

The drawback is in the constitution. Senator and President are to be considered belonging to the same organisation where one cannot have two positions. Since both positions are elected, it is morally right to resign from the position one is holding before contesting for the other. If it is by selection one need not resign while offering as a candidate for the other position. Legal and constitution experts can only sort out any anomaly in such rule.

While it's natural to want the top position, if one does not get there, they can still say they've done their best. My interpretation is that since the person has the senate seat anyway, why not stay a while, and do what they are good at doing, if they are truly good at doing it? Imagine it all politicians were presidents, and no senators? Where would the world be? LOL

I really do not know if there is hope for our country. There is to much politics. I guess, this election time will be our chance to choose the right people. Perhaps the future of our country lies in our hands. If we do make a change, then we should choose someone with good platform, and has the capability to do the necessary change. But the question is, is there anyone who can deliver such? Or are they just like anybody who has been there before? Now going back to your discussion, I also cannot understand why this is allowed. Perhaps they should amend the law that will make those in position running in the election be automatically considered resigned. Fact is, those who are running should have the decency to resign the moment they run for public office. I am sure that they cannot function effectively anymore, and worst, they will use their current position to gain more votes. Sad to note, nobody has done that. This will only show what kind of people they are... I feel sorry for our country.

dear dweebs,
i hope someone here can state what law is being followed. i thought a politician who is in office, ones he runs for office is automatically unseated. seems that is not what is happening here. if this is the case, isnt it too obvious that they can manipulate things while they are in power while at the same time running for another position? filipinos are "fried in its own oil", that's how it should be termed. how i hate politics.

You have to remember that these were the same people who drafted election laws. It was suppose to ensure the continuity of the Senate. I do not know why only them. I suppose there are really people who want to have a cake and eat it too. They like to have a fallback position in case they lose the elections.
