Fake profile in social networks, why they do that?

About years ago when the based text chatting program was spread across the world and finally it was has big transformation into social network as we know nowadays, let says friendster, twiter, face book, and much other.
Among the user from billions of them, could be thousand or more, have an account with fake profile or details, I just wonder why they have to do that?

maybe they are just spying someone,looking at their profile so that somebody could not recognize him/her..

Maybe they do that for a hobby 
. Well, their trip is really out of my mind. But anyway, it might be because they like to have fun or fool around on people so they decided to go on creating a lot of fake accounts. I haven't heard about the reason of creating fake account is to earn money.
Because we know that most sites that pays are strict on implementing one IP address per account. But to such social network sites, it is mainly for meeting people, or having communication with your friends or even enemies if you like that.
