Questions about Growing Sunflowers

Good morning~ I'm trying out sunflowers this year. I've never done them before. I have tiny sprouts coming up from seeds which I'll eventually be able to plant. We have some good, sunny spots. But I'm not exactly sure where to put them where it won't look awkward. Other than having them in the sun, do you have any tips on where to put sunflowers in your yard...or when to plant them? Let me know if you have other tips at all about growing sunflowers. This is a new venture for me. Thanks so much! Happy gardening! ~artsyfartsygal! :)

Sunflowers are easy to grow, once they get started. I agree with the others in that they will probably need to be staked. I grow my along a 6 foot fence and tie them to it when they start to lean over. The only other trouble you may have is with squirrels. They will cut the head off before it completely matures and take off with it, or eat it on the spot. Plant them where they'll get plenty of sunshine. They don't take a lot of water, but it won't hurt them if you water more than necessary.

Thanks, Peavey! Is there anything you recommend I do in order to protect the sunflowers from the squirrels? Will you be growing sunflowers this summer? Thanks again, artsyfartsygal

What kind are they? Some can be dotted around but those that need support - especially the giant varieties - need a wall or trellis next to them or some canes that they can be tied to. It also helps if you can keep them out of strong winds.
